wool soaker modification

So I know nothing about knitting, sewing, etc. My mom does all that. She's been knitting a wool soaker pattern, acutally its a wrap, but she's sewing the legs closed to make it more secure, we found on here. They seem to work well enough at first, but the waistband seems to get stretched out and after a while they just fall off.

Are there any tips about modifying it that I can send to her, or should we just look for something new?

Hee hee. My sister is my official wool soaker knitter. I don't knit either, but I love to have her make them for me.

Anyway, the patterns she has used all call for a knitted tie at the waist. You make a knitted tube (I have no idea how) and weave it about an inch below the top of the soaker, then tie it in the front, like this: http://community.livejournal.com/pun...rs/110889.html

Even if you don't have special holes in the top of the soaker for this purpose, it's fine. You just run it in between some stitches.

My niece had some scraps of a really really thick wool yarn, so I just run that along the top instead of making the knitted tube.

Yeah, I'd put a drawstring in there. Unless your soaker is felted, it's usually not hard to thread one into the waistband. I used to make i-cords (a knitted tube), but now I just do twisted cords. Take a nice long piece of yarn and double it over. Then tie one end to a doorknob, and hook the other up to a cordless drill or screwdriver and twist until it starts to form loops. Grab either end and let it twist up on itself from the middle, and tie off either end.
