Digestive enzymes?

I'v read that many of you ladies take digestive enzymes and/or give them to your lo. I've been searching for awhile for one and it seems as though they all are derived from shellfish. Due to food allergies we've been told to avoid shellfish entirely:. So is there a brand of digestive enzymes that is not derived from shellfish?

I take Enzymedica Digest Gold and I give my dd Houston's ZyCarb or ZymePrime. In between meals we take Houston's Peptizyde and NoFenol. I have not seen enzymes that have shellfish.

Any good enzyme is going to be plant-based. The two companies I mentioned make great products that have very high amounts of enzymes in them, which is what you want in an enzyme product. The stronger the better.

We use Enzymedica.

I know there are vegetarian digestive enzymes - dd is on them. I can't remember the brand though. We just got them at our local health food store.

Do enzymes help your body process the food and therefore eliminate a reaction, or does it actually help your body to heal? Or both? I'm confused as to the use. And so far I can't find one that doesn't have a food in it that my kids react to.

Kathy have you looked at the ingredients for Enzymedica Digest Gold? They don't have papain or bromain (from papaya and pineapple).

The enzymes break down the food proteins so they pass through the body instead of hanging around in the gut and leaking out into the bloodstream. In that way, they minimize reactions (if you are reacting generally to foods you're eating; but it's definitely not a way to start eating all your allergenic foods) and they allow your gut to heal because it's not constantly being stressed and damaged by the proteins and gut-leaking.

I haven't tried them/didn't see them. It looks like that one doesn't have anything in it except the enzymes. Is that possible? My DD reacts to every fruit except banana. I'm wondering if that would be the push that she needs to heal.

Are digestive enzymes ok to take while breastfeeding?

We're having some serious gas issues with my newborn and I'm desperate to find something to help him. We're doing probiotics already, and I'm thinking about cutting dairy but not convinced dairy is the problem. We saw an LC and she thinks it's a latch issue combined with an overactive letdown.

Yes they are completely safe while bf. Just make sure they are plant-based.

I wouldn't write the dairy thing off. It can't hurt to cut it out for a few weeks to see.
