A small PSA

My friend at work has a 9 year old son. Last year he spent the day swimming. He was wearing swim trunks with nothing on under them. He is circed. He was in and out of the pool several times through the day. At one point he went to the bathroom and didn't come back for a while. When his dad went to check on him they son was in the bathroom crying. One small part of the loose skin around his penis had slipped through the mesh liner of his swim trunks. After several hours in the ER, they finally pushed it back through using neuro surgery tools.

I figured all mamas of intact babies should know this. I do not know how small the mesh was but I am warning everyone I can. My DH wears underwear under his trunks and right now my son wears swimmers....but he will wear underwear or I will cut the mesh out later in his life.

ETA: I just realized that this may be better in Life With A Babe or Toddlers. If so, please move to the appropriate place!!

That's interesting I've never heard of that happening before (not to me anyway) but I guess better safe than sorry.

All us mothers of uncirced boys are twice as likely to have this happen. I'm going to go have mine circed now!

Now you know I didn't mean it that way!! I am warning everyone regardless of their babes status. My DH has always worn underwear under his trunks and would probably have had DS do the same with this situation known or not. I just thought it would be a good thing to watch out for. Maybe it was a 1 in a million chance but I know that if this had been my intact child, the first thing a doc would say is that I should have circed him and this wouldn't have happened.

I'm intact and I've worn swim trunks all my life and never had any problems.

But thank you for sharing the story anyway.

The case for circumcised swimming trunks

Actually this came up on another board. A mom was puzzled about why her son kept on having pain. Frank and others narrowed it down to being pool related, but I think we all figured it was that the chemicals were irritating. However mom figured out it was the mesh.

I think another similar case happened around the same time too.-- Helping make the connection. That boy had gotten the foreskin caught, but it wasn't a big deal- they hadn't needed to go to the ER, just were a little leery of mesh (understandably)

BTW, I'm assuming Sarah was being sarcastic (-;

Anyways, first cut the mesh off the swimsuit and then see-- that's a pain free alternative :

OK, I don't mean to get "graphic", but I think a circed male would have more of a reason to watch for the mesh because the "ridge" that is formed could get caught verses an intact male is all the same width (not erected). Does that make sense?

???
Why didn't they just cut the mesh? It's usually machine-knitted/woven (like machine-made lace) and will unravel on it's own quite easily once a cut is made.

It does, but I've never seen bathing suit mesh with holes anywhere near large enough to admit an entire glans, circ'd or otherwise. Usually the holes in the mesh are less than 1/8 inch in diameter.

It seems like I remember a thread a year maybe 2-3 ago about the foreskin of one boy getting caught in the mess of swim trunks. I am going to see if I can sniff it out.

ETA found it http://www.mothering.com/discussions...ht=swim+trunks it was last year.

: to self remove all mesh from swim trunks.

my Ds got caught in his swim trunks a couple of yrs ago. I just rip the mesh until he was out. My son won't wear underwear.

I find the mesh a bit abrasive anyway, so usually remove it.

That said, my sons, both of whom have their foreskin have never mentioned any problem. So it may depend upon the mesh, some may have larger openings.

As far as the little boys I've seen, the circ'd boys seem to have more loose, unattached skin than my intact sons. They aren't retractable yet, so there's not a lot to get caught anywhere. Most circs seem to be pretty loose now, so they have a lot of skin, but it's not safely adhered to the penis!!
Though when they're older....maybe that's why European men wear Speedos!!!

It wasn't the glans that was stuck, just some skin along the shaft. They coudn't cut the mesh due to swelling of the skin. My friend is a charge nurse in my NICU, I assure you she tried everything she could before taking him to the ER.

Ah yes it was that thread on MDC and another post elsewhere... they would have been about the same time...

The mesh I've seen wouldn't unravel if you cut it, so I can see why it would be very hard to remove.
I think the problem is that everything is wet, too, and then it might get stuck as it dries and things change shape??

That actually happened to my eldest quite a while ago. We were able to cut the mesh though, no ER visit thank goodness!

We cut out the mesh out of new suits now too.

Take care,

Wacky! I'd never heard of this. My boys practically live in their swim trunks during the summer, we spend several hours each evening in the pool, and fortunately this has never happened to either of them.

Huh.

I guess I could see it as being more likely for the end of the foreskin to do that than the skin of a circ'd, but the OP saying it was side skin on the shaft makes it seem like that could have just as easily happened whether he was circ'd or not.

Interesting PSA, though!

I've never heard this either, but definitely wouldn't want it to happen. I'll make sure my boys wear undies or cut out the mesh. Huh. Better safe then sorry!

Thanks!

Yeah, I had read something like this happening to an intact boy last year or the year before. I immediately went and cut the mesh out of DS's shorts.

Wow, I have never heard of this. I Just bought DS his first pair of swim trunks (up to now he's worn just a reusable swim diaper with nothing over it) and he wore them this week. What is the mesh there for, anyway?
