Jaw pain - what to do?

Thread Starter
backstory: my jaw has been popping on both sides since I was around 9 or 10. I have gone months at a time in the past without it being a problem. I got braces put on for the second time back in november (the first time I was 11 and I didn't wear my retainers like I was supposed to). In the last few weeks my jaw has been popping a lot. I cannot control it and it's really painful and my jaw ends up feeling numb by the middle of the day from all the popping.
Also, I've recently started grinding my teeth in my sleep, which my orthodontist says is b/c the teeth are moving and aren't lined up correctly yet.

Anyways, I spoke with my ortho today (I saw him and my regular dentist last friday), and he basically told me to take aspirin and deal with it. He said he will prob. make a night splint to wear, but didn't say when and I don't go back for another month. Has anyone else had to deal with this? Was there anything that actually helped relieve the pain and soreness? Any help is appreciated!

TIA

I have the EXACT same problem. I haven't had numbness but the pain from my jaw will travel up the side of my face and turn into a massive headache. I got a night guard for the clenching/grinding and it really has helped. I'm also getting braces for the second time soon, because I didn't wear my retainers either. I'm hoping that helps as well.

It's called TMJ, or more specifically TMJD. It really sucks. I empathize. I have to be careful about not eating certain foods that are too hard and work my jaw too much.

My chiropractor fixed mine - no more popping, no clicking, no pain. Might be worth a shot!

It may sound crazy, but smiling really wide can relieve jaw pain. And for night grinding, I do yoga before bed and I don't grind anymore. So smile more!
