quick q about handstitching a seam

Hey all,
I am making a pair of baby booties out of anti pile fleece. I need to stitch the top to the sole and I will be handstitching it. What is the best stitch to use for this material? The seam will be on the inside so no one has to see it. Should I use regular thread?

I like to use backstitching when hand sewing. It holds up the best for me.
