Good luck!

If you don't mind sharing, why?

Money. I have to spend almost nothing this month to get back on track with my debt pay down goals. I spent several hundred extra dollars last month on my partner's birthday present, and I am making up for it now.

That and honestly, I'm an addict and I need to moderate my behavior.

Do you have a super small oven?
No my oven is not super small. I think it is more rectangular (lenthwise) than square (widthwise) though, if that makes sense..

To use the round stone, I had to tip the stone at a an angle in order to close the door, if that makes sense. I mean I could still use it, but my cookies came out a bit uneven...

It helps that we are in a social circle of committed dumpster divers. Our food dumpster tips usually come from them. Great places around here are Trader Joes & Dunkin Donuts. Basically any bakery will throw out their "stale" (really its only 24 hours old) bread items from the day.
Do a google search for freegan and you'll find a ton of tips!
Thanks! I'll report back after I take the dive... I am excited and nervous too

I love clothing swaps! I am hosting one this fall in my studio... nothing like a bunch of women chatting it up over an enormous pile of clothes

I think I"m going to start a new thread asking for clothing swap tips. The other church called it a giveaway, but my gut is telling me that some people respond better to the idea of a swap.

Um, how did I miss this thread? I heart thrifting.

Our Goodwill here is VERY hit or miss. It's really small out in the town we live in.

However, in (greater) Chattanooga, there is a HUGE America's Thrift Store, where I found myself today. I LOVE their new stuff section, where I guess they get overstocks or discontinued items. We picked up three brand new, in package toothbrushes for DD for 99 cents (total for all three) today. I also got a pair of corduroys, a pair of jeans, and a pair of windpants for DS for the winter for 99 cents each, one was the 70% off color of the day (score!), and I get a military discount of 10% off on top of that (which, in TN, basically takes care of the tax). So, three pairs of pants, for $2.04 (plus tax). I was very proud of myself.

They also do a good job of packaging up little toys (toy cars, action figures, stuff like that) into bags of 5 or 6 toys, and then pricing them for 99 cents. I go through them every time I'm there (and try to get whatever color tag is 50 or 70% off for the day) so that I can stock up on little new-to-them toys for long car rides and things like that.

By the way, I have been digging and digging and digging for jeans in 3T for my munchkin, and all I can find are jeans with embroidery on them, or total elastic waist (which she doesn't like). And the 4T sections in the stores I go to tend to be pretty bare as well. I wonder why that is a hard-to-thrift size.

I'm having a hard time with size 8-10 girls shoes too. I try to buy a few sizes ahead if I see a good deal, but I have nothing in her "next size up" stash. (That goes for thrift stores or shoes on clearance elsewhere.) Again, wonder why that is a barren area.

Woot! Woot! Lucky Seven jeans in my exact size (when does that ever happen?), in perfect condition at the $1/lb thrift store. I have never had this brand before but I have heard they fit really nicely. Fingers crossed I have some nice fall jeans.

Does anyone else thrift on vacation? : On a recent trip to New England I bought several pounds of kids books for Ds. How do I know? Because it nearly put our luggage over those nice new airline weight limits. :

I think, for me, its the thrill of the hunt that I love the most.

I do love that rush you get when you find something great.

I hear you. I finally brought home some jeans with blown out knees thinking I'll try the patch route. For awhile wondered how hard it would be to get the embroidery thread out for Ds. I just wish jeans were more unisex at this age. I find all kinds of little girl flare jeans but nada for Ds.

I am also jealous, you mamas with Dds. Pink is so much easier to see in those bins that the boy clothes colors, which look the same as adult clothes a lot of the time.

Today I picked up a wool blanket (99 cents instead of 6.99 because it had the right color tag) - It may wind up being a makeshift curtain. I got a nice brown sleeveless shirt for 70 cents - marked down from $3 because the summer stuff is on sale. And then I got a book that I am hoping to sell. It was $1.50. I sold a previous copy for 15 bucks.

I have a hard time with 4T girls clothes too. Every once in a while I find a good pair of Old Navy. Luckily, DD only wants to wear dresses and they are usually in good shape.

I am thrifting tomorrow at some new stores while I am out of town. It won't be a sale day, but I still might find some stuff worth full price.

DD is also in 4T clothes and I can't find many good things for her either. My philosophy about it is that kids her age really wear out their clothes, get stains/rips all the time and so it doesn't make it to the thrift store.
We went to the thrift store yesterday and this time I did find a really cute top for DD, sort of like a Pippi Longstocking apron-type thing, it was 50 cents. Tomorrow we're going to the big fleamarket here again, I'm hoping for some good finds there!

I found a Hanna Anderson blue on blue dress for $2.00 It is missing a button (they are the stamped HA ones, so I can't just find a similar one somewhere) but I am giving it to my neighbor that has little girls.. will a size 120 fit a 5 yo do you think? I know a lot of people like this brand for quality and they kind of also grow with you, so I am thinking it will be ok..

I found new Joe Boxer underwear for my 10yo. $.50 each

I found 3 canvas 7th generation grocery bags 50 cents each YEAH! With the two nylon ones I have I think I can be grocery bag free now!

Whole bunch of cloth book covers- the stretchy kind for $.50 each new in package. I might use these for classroom prizes..

a canvas bag with Mona Lisa and sequins, etc on it.. $1.50

1 pair of super cute rubber boots in bright yellow for ds $1.00

a really cute bulletin board for the house with magnets, white board, and pockets. $4.50 but it has a cedar? edge and really classy.

and the find of the day...

A Star Trek coffee cup. $1

Even though I am on thrifting fast this month, I ended up going to the bins on Tuesday night. I gave myself a special dispensation, as I needed to find some get well care package stuff for my grandma (and I did). I also, however, found these three vintage scores:

Super cute strawberry dish set. I have no idea hold old this is--my guess is late 70s. Looks like the plate and bowl might be worth selling to replacements.com. The little cream pitcher has a chip in it, so I might keep it--it's very cute. $1.78

Groovy bag. I have no idea what this is meant to be--it's the size and shape of a pillow case, but has a drawstring at the top. However, there was no way I was passing up something with this fabric. $1.

Pencil by number set. Isn't this cool? I really want to open it and do the historical pencil-by-numbers, but since it is still in the plastic and I believe from the mid-late 60s, I have resisted the urge so far. Not sure what I'll do with it. $.50.

That bag is really neat- it kind of looks likes a laundry bag I used when I was a kid. (The other stuff's cool, too, but i love the bag!!)

Maybe it's a laundry bag! I hadn't really thought of that. I couldn't figure out what a bad that size/weight would hold.

I think it might need to be taken apart and made into something else--it's clearly old and some of the stitching is loose. I may pass it on to one of my sewing-inclined friends for repurposing.

Yesterday I found a great lamp for $10. I also picked up 6 baskets for $2 each. We are going through baskets like crazy because we are giving apples away to friends. This is my new favorite thing. We have like 5 thrift/antique stores in town and they are full of great deals!

Well I sold some stuff today... with our impending move, our house is becoming like a thrift store. Potted plants for $1-2, camping gear, old ladderback chairs for $10, a big floor lamp for $10... lots of stuff totally $90 in all, which my friend is paying for by bartering housecleaning!
