Thrifting tribe! - Page 3

Luckily I am in walking distance of a thrift store.

Mine is goooood. I have a crock pot, lots of pots actually, a skirt that I just love, furniture, all for dirt cheap.

I tell you, my favorite things are from thrift stores. Now that I have a mortgage I am going to have a thrift policy anyway. I've never really fallen in love with anything I bought full price retail.

Thanks for this thread. I've decided to become a thrifter. I've dabbled in thrifting by buying used clothes here on the TP and on e-bay. But I'm ready to jump in and full-on thrift! It seems so silly to pay $30+ for a shirt when you can buy a used one for way less. My mom is into thrifting and I'm going to ask her to take me thrifting this week. I'll report back.

Can I join? I don't actually go to thrift shops much, although I did just buy DD two pairs of pants from a TS. But I do go garage sale-ing most weekends--we live in a relatively small area so gas doesn't add too much to our trips. I got almost all of DD's 24 month/2T clothes at garage sales, and I'll be buying all of her 3T and up clothes at garage sales...shoes too if I can ever find some. We also get tons and tons of books at garage sales. I sometimes buy clothes for myself at garage sales, but I'm kind of an odd size and I don't like buying even cheap clothes I can't try on since at least half the time I'll hate them once I try them on.

We've also been looking for things we need in the classifieds or on craigslist. We just found a complete California King bedroom set (mattress & boxspring, head & footboards, dresser, chest of drawers, mirror, nightstand) in good shape for $500 off craigslist The king size mattress & boxspring alone that DH had been wanting was well over that and that didn't even include a headboard, so that's a great deal. I also found a serger in the classified for $25 (actually I ended up giving the lady $40) so I was pretty happy about that!

Hey Tangled Hill, were by any chance at the North Blue Hanger today? I saw a mama there with a baby in a sling and wondered if it was you.

I thrift shop as much as I can! I wish I could do more, but with the kids in tow, it's a challenge. And there don't seem to be so many good thrift stores around here, anyway, and with the price of gas...

I went to what used to be a great Goodwill yesterday, and I was sadly disappointed. I found some things for oDD, and a few for yDD, but only one pair of jeans for DS to grow into, and a few children's videos. Usually, I find a lot more great stuff there! I guess it's the economy--more people buying and fewer dropping stuff off.

I almost never buy new clothes for the girls, but I find boys' clothes are a lot harder to find in good shape, especially as they get bigger. DS has always gotten more new clothes than oDD, and the older they get, the bigger the difference grows! Luckily, oDD doesn't care--as long as she has clothes she likes, she doesn't care where they come from, and she understands that saving money on anything benefits the whole family.

I usually get a lot of my own clothes at the thrift stores, too, but I did buy some new this year. With the post-pregnancy changes in my body, and the insane schedule, I needed to shop quickly and efficiently, and the local Goodwill doesn't work that way! I'm definitely back to thrifting now, though. I just wish I knew more good ones in the area.

Nope, not me. I've got a ten-year-old, but no baby, anymore. I thought about going today, but we just had so much to do. We did discover a new little Indian and Middle Eastern foods market, though, on North Lamar. Sesame candy - yum!

The only thrift store by us is a cruddy Goodwill. The other ones are 30 minutes away. I still stop in the goodwill at least every couple of weeks to see if they have anything.

Where my mom lives, she has great thrift stores. Whenever I go home, we go thrifting. There's a really cool one by her that specializes in estates. They get some of the best stuff!

!!!!!!!!!

Not thrifting, but church rummage sale today. I bought the coolest little set for dollies. It looks to be handmade out of branches and rope. It even has handmade bed linens and chair pads. It was all in pieces and I had to figure out if it was all there before I bought it. I think I will glue it back together with some wood glue.

table and chairs
bed
bed frame
close-up
chair pad, how cute!

Please guess how much I paid for it!

Tilia, that is adorable!

I went to goodwill for the first time last weekend because I desperately needed shorts. I got 2 pairs of shorts and a jean skirt - all brand name. I also got a great pair of shoes. The grand total was $15 and it wasn't even their 1/2 off day! I had to try really hard not to go overboard and not buy too much. I have a tendancy to do that when the prices are good. Anyone else have that problem?

You guys found some good deals, it sounds like!

No thrifting for me this weekend. (We need a broke smiley with its little pockets turned inside out.)

Uh, yeah. In fact, I've got bins full of baby and kid clothes through about size 4 that I need to re-sell or something because of this very thing.

Also, I've tried the "revitalized" approach (tie-dyeing onesies and things) and they don't sell. People want new--people who aren't me, anyway. :

My DH and oldest two are at camp this week, so Nick, the baby, and I went "treasure hunting" this morning. I got some awesome deals and spent less than $10. I'm going to post pics when I bring it in!

that is awesome! Good score.

I went garage saling this weekend, found a booster seat ($5) for my oldest dd, got a Little Tykes plastic table and chairs set ($2) for my office, found a few long sleeved shirts for fall for my middle dd ($1) each, a wooden clock toy (.75), and diary and pens for a birthday gift ($1) and a Boo-bah toy
($1) for my youngest. She fell in love with that stupid thing and since she doesn't really show a ton of interest in toys I got it for her. I am having a garage sale this week, most everything will be .50, with a bag day on Saturday. I can't wait!
