YO at beginning of a pearl row?

I'm trying my first lace knitting pattern- a simple shoulder shaw. The pattern is a triangle, increased by doing YO at the beginning of each row. On the right side of the shaw, where I'm doing the YO before the knit row, I have a nice loopy edge (sorry if that's not the techincal term for it ) but on the other side in the front, where I'm doing the YO at the beginning of the pearl row, it is tight- no loopy edge. I thought I'd have loopy edges on both sides (or so it appears from the picture).

I don't know what I'm doing wrong I knit English style, if that helps clarify where I'm coming from.

It'd be helpful if you could link us to the pattern (or write out the line in question) and/or give us a picture of your work.

how are you YOing? for a purl row, that would mean bringing the yarn to the back of the work before purling. Bringing it to the front would just be a normal purl stitch, which would cause it to not have the loopy edge.

That's my best guess.

This is the pattern I'm doing (I have the book from the library) http://www.knitpicks.com/Shoulder%20...D31004222.html

The line I'm having problems with I'm supposed to do a YO then purl the row. I am definitely making a stitch, so I'm doing the YO, but I'm starting to wonder if it is a tension problem, because when I'm pulling at the YO edge at the beginning of the pearl row, I can pull loose some loops.

I've never made a yarn over at the beginning of a row, I've always made yarn overs at least one stitch in from the beginning. Way less trickier I would guess!
