We have two babies in the NICU who are in critical condition. Intubated, pain meds, blood pressure meds, ect......So, what is the first question out of their mouths?? Both mothers first wanted to know "when will he be circumcisied" then one asked if the neonatologist was "the doctor that will do the circ?" WTH??????? Can we please keep your child alive FIRST then worry about mutilating him later.....after his long fight for his life??

What is wrong with parents?

That kind of behavior is natural once parents are tricked into believing that circumcision is a legitimate choice. The deceit which makes parents believe that falls squarely on the doctors and hospitals. Hospitals should have policies against non-therapeutic circumcision. So should doctors. They pretend it's all on parents, but it is not, unless the parents perform the circumcision themselves outside the hospital.

What is the mechanism that keeps you from saying that out loud? I must be missing it! I would have shouted it loud enough for them to hear me down in maternity!

Somehow I suspect this would land you in some trouble but a glib reply might go something like this: "We usually treat the therapeutic medical needs of babies before doing cosmetic procedures."
Yea, I really can't say anything snappy in response if I would like to keep my job. We do say to parents "He has many medical needs right now that are more important than circ....." Something along those lines.

Well, when our DS was in the NICU, it was the nurses and doctors (OBs not peds) voluntarily telling us that he wouldn't be circed until it was time to go home. We told them that he would not be circed at all.
