Read this article in the Daily Mail today:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/ar...FIVE-FOUR.html

They usually seem to post pretty anti bf sensationalist articles, but overall this one is pretty good.

I like the use of language when talking about risk - increased risk for children with formula feeding, increased risk to mothers who don't breastfeed. Nice to see in a mainstream newspaper!

I thought it was good, too. However now they have a new article up, with this:
http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/ne...6908-20603886/

Quote:
Professor Prem Misra, a Glasgow consultant psychiatrist, said: "Medically, there is no benefit to breast-feeding after six months.

"I think Mrs Onions is satisfying her own psychological desire by doing something she thinks is beneficial to the kids.
!

I looked all over the web and found phone numbers and addresses for him, but no email.

WTF?? A psychiatrist talking about medical benefits? The WHO and the AAP recomend minimum BF time of one or two years, where is he getting this "6 months" number from?

I feel like I've just gone back in time a few decades. How sad. Does anyone really take medical advice from a psychiatrist?

Perhaps he pulled it out of his...

Oops, I was about to go into a UA violation of a rant. I will refrain!

The sad thing is ALL doctors should be talking about breastfeeding, and should all have their facts straight. I worry that this psychiatrist may encourage his patients to wean early.

I think people get the 6 months number from "EXCLUSIVE breastfeeding for 6 months" which might lead someone who has no desire to do any REAL research to think that there is no medical benefit after 6 months.
Honestly 9 times out of 10 when I hear that it's from someone who should know better!

Wouldn't it be common sense that any time you give a baby breastmilk, they are getting immunities and the perfect food which in itself is a medical benefit?

I would take what ever is read from the Daily Mail with a MASSIVE grain of salt it is a gossip magazine similar to our Star or Enquirer.
Here is the contact info for the Daily Mail though

I posted a comment... the other comments weren't nearly as bad as some anti-BFing ones I've read, but still kinda ignorant. I feel like saying 'You shouldn't let your five-year-old daughter wear pink tutus/jump up and down when she's excited/hide under the kitchen table, or she'll still be doing it when she's 21!'

They didn't show my comment, which basically asked how anyone was going to force a child of that age to nurse if they didn't want to - obviously the children want to, and I wish the article would have led more into that. The "insists" in the article title makes it sound like "mummy" is making them do this. My child would bite off my nipple if I attempted to make him nurse when he didn't want to.

Just noticed though and would like to point out -

The Daily Record is a different paper altogether to the Daily Mail.
