the other day at the dr. she was examing ds and i was doing usual hovering and she went to examine his penis and tried to retract the foreskin. she only get it a little before i stopped her. but she said ' i wasnt going to retract it all the way, just part of the way to clean it' i told her i didnt want anyone messing with his foreskin and that it would be fine as long as it was left alone. she says it will retract on its own but it does need to be cleaned. (no i'm very worried she has been doing this all along since i only found out drs actually did this recently) ds is 4 mos.. it makes he sad. he screamed as soon as she started to pull it back. his penis looks ok but she did retract enough to see the little pink skin underneath... is there anything i should do? and will it just heal on its own? i thought there was no reason to retract the foreskin at all.. am i wrong? please let me know

Just keep an eye on it for now. It might become a bit inflamed but that should be all. Just make sure she doesn't do it again. If you want some documentation to provide your doctor at the next visit just let me know I'll post it.

If you read the Warning To Parents Of Intact Sons sticky at the top of the CAC page you will see that sadly this happens all to often and it is something we have to be on our toes about to stop before it happens if possible.

She is not up to date on the proper care of the intact penis which is LEAVE IT ALONE no one but the owner of the penis should ever retract even if it is retractable,

Also read the Definition Of Retraction sticky. Any movement at all of the foreskin back toward the body IS retraction.

If you are breastfeeding, put some expressed milk on there. That's what I did when it happened to my two sons. Interestingly, they were both at 4 months too.

In fact, I wrote this after it happened to Nathan: Intact Care Agreement

WOW! I will never understand US Pedi's fascination with intact boys penises! Unless there is a known problem, there is no reason she should even be touching his penis, let alone manipulating it.

Think about it this way...if this was a girl, how sceeved would you be if your Ped wanted to stick something into your daughter's vagina? It's the same thing.

Do not allow this doc inside you Ds's diaper. She has no need to be there!

And WTF? SHE has to clean him? Isn't that your job? Again, if this was a girl, how weirded out would you be if she wanted to clean your DD's vagina? (unless she was doing a diaper change?

that is so true! she certainly wouldnt be 'cleaning' anything on a little girl so why on gods green earth is it alright to do that to little boys? particularly considering the functions of the foreskin. i think im going to print out the thing from the AAP about not retracting foreskin. do they have one about dr. b/c this one is to the parents about care of the penis and if she says that shes a dr so she is trained i might smack her

If she tries to pull the doctor card, give her the info from DOC (doctors opposing circumcision). Those are other doctors saying not to do it, ever.

I also agree, what right does she have to clean your son?? You're his parent, not her. I have to say, I've never seen my ped even touch my kids parts-GIRLS OR BOYS-regardless of age. Thats their privates and it seems wrong to manipluate them at all! I mean yeah, if you're cleaning a nasty diaper, you have to, but as my ped said, if they are peeing and pooping, theres no reason to be checking down there anyway. (she does open the diaper and look, as she has had parents not notice something was wrong, like a yeast infection)

DOC is the way to go on this one, doctors are more willing to listen to their peers other than just lowly patients and knowitall parents.
