Friend harassed by mall security for breastfeeding - Page 3

Just wrote to the mall. This is absolutely unfrigginbelievable! Here is my email to them:

I just saw the news story regarding the nursing mom being harassed by the security guard. Does that balding idiot old man (Ron Thomas) really expect the public to believe that the security guard was protecting the mother from gawking customers! Please, don't insult my or anyone elses intelligence. I have been nursing my kids for a total of 3 years and not once have I needed "protection" from anyone. Most the time people passing by smile. I will never shop at Westgate again or any place associated with you. Will you please send me a list of shops and properties that share the same ownership as you so that I can quickly boycott them. Please tell the balding old man to face the public, admit he was lying and fire the security guard while revisiting their policy to protect breastfeeding mothers from your own employees. I can't wait to share this story with my many stay-at-home mom's groups.
PS:
Don't women/mothers do most the shopping for most families?!! Good luck with the continued profitablity of your Puritanical mall.

I'd love an update on this situation if possible

Did the mama ever get her well deserved apologies?

Very sad, I can't believe the manager tried to gloss the situation over. The mall dh works at has each security guard sign a contract re: breastfeeding. If there is a complaint, the person is given a choice of going about their business or being escorted out of the mall. I think the offending officer and manager need to give the mama a real apology.
lol sorry. you are the exception to the rule then. mall cops here tell people to walk closer together so they arent taking up so much room. weird.

I'm not sure what you mean - that the person who complains is escorted out or that the breastfeeding mother is escorted out? Can I ask what state this mall is in?

Not trying to get anyone into trouble but I have never heard of a mall having employees sign a contract to enforce a breastfeeding discrimination policy.

Updates!

I'm sorry! With all the forums I thought I got back to everybody with updates! Ron Thomas actually called us Friday (after he actually investigated) and wanted us to go up there so he could talk face to face. Well the mall office closes at 5 and my mother didn't get off until 5 about an hour or so away. He actually stayed at the mall to talk to us. He knows he is definitely in some trouble.

We went up there and he first of all said that he was so sorry that an employee could treat somebody like this.... he went on and on to apologize. I had a list of what I wanted from this experience. One of the things was for the mall to host a breastfeeding awareness day! He actually seemed open to it but not so much the other things. I told him what I wanted to be compensated for and he asked me if I had a dollar amount in mind (clearly knowing he was wrong and trying his best to make me stop getting this story around).

He sent out a public apology to the media, I know of one person that saw it. I didn't nor can I find it anywhere on the internet. It was very impersonal. It basically was like, we're apologizing because we were legally wrong and sorry to spartanburg, sc for any bad publicity it has received. I told him that I wanted him to get back on camera like he did in the first place and admit that his officer was harassing us. He was like well I don't know if they'll air an apology twice.... We'll I guess he should have talked to me first, just like he should have investigated before making such a harsh statement.

Anyways, I go meet with my lawyer today and we'll see what's going to happen from there..

OHH.. I talked to Emily Gillette (The girl that got kicked off the airplane) she said basically the SAME thing happened to her, where they lied on TV. She has got to be one of the sweetest people I have ever talked to!

Thanks for everybody's support, let's not forget about this incident and keep passing this story around, we can make a difference!

Have you reported this to
http://www.firstright.org/

They are trying to document all cases of BFing discrimination & harrassment, and help people with the process after the fact.

This is so ridiculous. I sent an email. I'm all for a nurse-in too. That is, if my 2 year old will comply
Keep us updated!

Good for you for not backing down. You're really strong for sticking up for your rights. For real, let us know if you need any specific support.

I sent an email and would love to participate in a nurse in. Thank you Haydensmommy08 for doing what I KNOW I would have been unable to do at Westgate. With baby #2 you better believe I will be showing off these boobies and nursing everywhere!

Here is my letter:
I'm writing to tell you that even though we spend most of our vacation time in Spartanburg, and used to spend a lot of time and money in your mall, we will not be returning until you issue an official statement apologizing for harassing a breastfeeding mother and announcing that you have trained your security officers to treat breastfeeding women with respect.
I'm absolutely disgusted to read about the appalling treatment of a breastfeeding mother last week by one of your security officers, despite a South Carolina law that protects the right to breastfeed in all public places. I have also read your response that the officer was trying to "protect" the mother, which is laughable, especially considering the officer called local police, then continued to stand over the mother long after she'd finished breastfeeding her 4 month old baby and refused to let her leave until police arrived.
The humiliation and disrespect this breastfeeding mother suffered at the hands of your mall employee is reprehensible.
You should be ashamed of yourself

So far, I think you are doing everything good within your power to hold these people responsible for their offensive actions. Way to stand up for breastfeeding and what is right! It is not always easy, but you are inspiring all women (lactivists and breastfeeding moms!).
