Alternative Milk?

DD hasn't been able to have milk or soy or almonds for the last couple years, so I've gotten used to using rice milk in everything (even make my own to supplement so it's not quite so expensive).

However, DS just tested as milk, soy, and RICE. So now what do I do? I looked at almond milk and hemp milk, and all the kinds that they carried at Whole Foods had either rice or soy in the ingredients. Anybody know what else I could make into milk? I have a soyquick soymilk maker (what I make the rice milk with) so potentially I could make something. But I'm having trouble thinking of anything.

Thanks ladies!

It's sad, but we have no safe milks here at all at this point. For my pancakes, I use water. For my cookies, I use grape juice. It works ok... everyone eats it all up.

The DariFree has Lactic Acid in it. Not sure if that's okay if he can't have milk. Is that related to Lactose?

I've seen recipes for oat milk. Can he have gf oats? What about hemp?

He can't have oats. And all the hemp milk I saw at Whole Foods either had rice or soy in it. As did the Almond Milk.

How frustrating! I hate how soy is added to everything.

I've seen almond milk recipes, too. http://paleofood.com/nmilks.htm

These suggest sweeteners like fruit, maple syrup or stevia. We also use agave nectar. I'm not sure if the ALCAT will test for that. . .

Although it can be fermented from lactose (milk sugar), most commercially used lactic acid is derived by using bacteria such as Bacillus acidilacti, Lactobacillus delbueckii or Lactobacillus bulgaricus to ferment carbohydrates from nondairy sources such as cornstarch, potatoes and molasses. Thus, although it is commonly known as "milk acid", vegan products can contain lactic acid as an ingredient.

I always call companies to confirm the source if not indicated on the label.

We use coconut milk, it's really good!

I do use coconut milk in baking, though because of it's stronger taste, it can't be used for everything. And his results for coconut haven't come back yet...

Lactic acid is one of those multi-source things that annoys me. DD can't have potatoes or corn or dairy, DS can't have dairy or molasses, so I tend to avoid it. I just hate a week's reaction for something questionable.

I use water as a milk substitute for all cooking & baking. If you really want a milk, I'd say make your own hemp or almond milk, use diluted coconut milk, or maybe look into making "milk" from a different type of nuts, like cashews, if you want something your DD can have too.
