My insurance won't pay for...

My insurance won't pay for an Ambu bag for my DD, but guess what they DO cover? : It's just very, very annoying. An Ambu bag at her bed side is not really a necessity, but a very good idea. She hasn't ever stopped breathing, but it wouldn't be unexpected if she did. And if she did and those precious moments without oxygen caused further brain damage, she will end up costing them even MORE. Or maybe they are hoping she will just die so they don't have to cover her at all. I googled Ambu bags and they are like $26. And it's not just the Ambu bags. They don't provide nearly enough medical supplies and they wouldn't cover a pump for me but they WILL cover formula. Imagine what they could pay for if they stopped doing elective non-therapeutic surgery on infants.

I'm just irked today. There's no real reason for this post.

Isn't it amazing!

I just googled Ambu-Bags, as I had no idea what they were...yikes.

Insurance sucks.

Mine won't pay for circumcision unless it's medically necessary for disease or injury. So that's something. (I suppose someone could end up having a circ paid, for a UTI or yeast, but at least it won't be routine for newborns.)

They also won't cover more than $200 a year in routine care--that includes labs and pap tests. "Lucky" for me, my last pap was bad, and the follow-up showed CIN 1 (so tiny it was probably all removed in the biopsy) and HPV, so my paps will be paid for until they go back to routine screening. (By then I'll have different insurance with whole new worlds of crap to deal with.)

You would be amazed how many newborns are diagnosed with phimosis at birth when insurance companies don't cover RIC.

Bandgeek - I completely understand your frustration and I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. Insurance companies pretty much SUCK! Can you fight them on this?

Yep, mine wouldn't pay for a breast pump when my DS was born 9 weeks early and in the NICU, but they'd pay to have part of his penis cut off :
