what do you use as inserts?

I'm going to be making Rita's Rump pocket, Darling diapers, Mama Bird diapers, and Wee Wika diapers (experimenting with what I like).

Some of them come with instructions for the insert, but some don't. If they don't, do you just make your own, or use prefolds, or...? If you make your own, how do you know what size to make it?

Thanks for answering my questions. I'm so new to this!

I use prefolds mostly, but I also have inserts for DH. I made them...some from flannel, some from 1-2 layers of terry covered by another 2-4 layers of bird's eye. Basically whatever I had around. There's a pattern on the sticky in this section of how to make an insert...gives you the basics and dimensions. FWIW, I LOVE Rita's Rump patterns! I modify the fitted to use Aplix so DH will use them (he'll use prefolds in a cover, but he gripes and moans the whole time ) They dry so much faster than a fitted with an internal soaker, and they're super easy. I also use her cover pattern for a fleece cover. Good luck and happy sewing!

With RRPs, I use trifold soakers (1 layer of flannel covering 1 layer of microfiber...folded three times you've got 6 layers), sewn in a fortune cookie shape, so there's not even any folding involved.

I make my own pockets with the Chloe Toes pattern (love it!) and we use only microfiber towels as inserts. We have some that are roughly 12x12" and thinner, up to some that are 16x16 and thicker. Depending on the use, we just grab however many towels we might need (a couple big ones for night) , fold them in thirds, and stuff them in.

They're cheap if you purchase them in the auto section of a store like Wal-mart (though I hate Wal-mart) or Sam's Club (ugh) also has them really cheap right now. They're the same thing as the towels sold in other parts of the store, but they are more expensive depending on their intended use. Go figure. Ours are called auto windshield cloths. The only thing is that they are overdyed, so we wash them separately from the other diaper materials for the first week or so as they bleed a lot.

I have some other inserts that I traded for made of cotton and hemp, but one thing I like about the microfiber is that they are super absorbent and dry extremely fast. We hang diapers to dry, so that's important to us.

I use prefolds for everything. Trifolded I either lay them in or stuff my pockets with them. I think they are a way better option than microfiber because they wash better and don't get stinky.

For my RRP I cut up old towels for the insert. I just used a finished diaper to see how wide I would need it and guessed on the length.

I use the trifolded microfiber towels from Sam's club too
