molck -- how's the EC going?

How is it with EC? Working as you expected, or has there been anything that surprised you? Do both you and DH do it, or mainly you? I'm fascinated by the concept!

Slow, but I figure it's more about attitude than actual catches, so it's OK. I caught a poop this morning-- the first in a couple weeks.

The unexpected:

* I'm often just too tired to hold him up over the potty/sink/toilet, so I let him go in his diaper even though I know he's about to go and could have caught it. I make the cue noise, though.

* His lack of head control makes it tough sometimes. Even holding him in the newborn position, his head slinks off to the side. If I had bigger breasts, this wouldn't be a problem.

* Holding him over the potty and cueing, even with his diaper on, helps him go. I think this is good! (Also, he's too tiny for the BBLP, even though it's small; I can't imagine him ever being big enough to sit on it by himself!)

DH does the cues whenever he notices K peeing or pooping. He'll also hold a prefold open when he's changing him and cue/catch if he needs to go more. DH is also really good about changing DS as soon as he goes.

Overall, I think it's going well. Anyone else doing EC? How's it going?

I did EC with my first and loved it, then I had a second who was an autumn/winter baby and it was too hard to get off the clothes to catch much....and I so regret not doing it with her more as she's still in dipes at 20 months.

I have not done any EC with this one yet but he's only 2.5 weeks old. I think having a summer baby, I'll do it again.

I can't imagine doing it if he was in more than the diaper and t-shirt he wears now. And luckily our winters are pretty mild here, so i think baby legs should keep him warm enough (and he should be big enough for them to stay on ) by then.

At what age did you start ECing with your first? Did you spend much time doing diaper free in the beginning? I get too nervous to do it for long. Maybe once we eventually get to the park...

I have started to do a bit of ec too! i wasnt planning on it its just kind of happening. Poppy loves to be naked, so we just keep her on a couple of folded flat nappies or a towel, then if i see a cue i hold her over them and make the cue noise. I am not hard core about it, but we have had a few catches, Dh has even started to do it, it seems very respectful to her, especially as she hates being wet.

Those are the two main reasons I didn't really get into EC'ing much until DD was about 6-8 months old, and even then we only did it VERY casually...sometimes we wouldn't EC for days and sometimes only once a day,e tc...you get the idea. But it seemed to work anyway. She's pretty much competely PL'd now except for when we go out of the house- I'm not brave enough for that yet. But she stopped pooping in diapers COMPLETELY by 10/11 months and by 18 months peed on the potty regularly. Now she goes completely by herself- gets her stool, puts her potty seat on, goes, wipes, etc. I guess even part-time casual EC'ing pays off too!

I'll probably do it with this one too since it's warm. With DD it was harder during the winter.

I started doing EC with my first when i learned about it here. She was 3 months old. By 5 months, I had her diaper free overnight! I learned that when she woke in the night, she would be dry, so I'd hold her over the potty first, then nurse her. She stopped giving me cues when she began spending a lot of time on her tummy. I didn't have a poopy diaper after about 12-14 months if I recall correctly. She was really good at using the potty!

AS for going diaper free, I found that carrying the baby in the sling with a naked butt was really great for learning the cues. That little wiggle or fuss I would ignore found me wet a few seconds later. AFter getting peed on a time or two, I caught on to what her little signals meant. Line the sling with a prefold to two. I've got a few slings so it wasn't a really big deal to have one get wet.
