That's what I thought at first-- that it would make those muscles weak-- but years of cultural tradition and anecdotal evidence seem to show otherwise.

Here's another recent thread on belly binding during pregnancy.

So how long postpartum do you bind the belly? It makes sense to me, and I'd love to try it, but I'm just not sure how long it has to be done... Weeks? Months? Years?

I could use some vibes today. I had some light spotting yesterday and some more today. I took the day off and sent DS out with the nanny so I could rest. It seems my pg symptoms are disappearing as well

I'm sorry Hopefully the spotting is nothing. Sometimes I feel like my pg symptoms are disappearing too. Will send you some strong baby vibes.

Oh gosh, CityChic I hope everything's okay.

Regarding the belly binding during pregnancy thing, I don't like the term "belly binding" because to me that implies not allowing the belly to be as swelled out as it needs to be. I am however, a BIG fan of a maternity *support* belt, like this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Therapy-Best-B...3982359&sr=8-6

I wore this all throughout my last pregnancy and it made a HUGE difference with my sciatica pain. But it's not binding the belly -- it's adding support for your back and belly.

After the baby was born, I used a belly binding elastic type product (from BRU) briefly, because it was supposed to help reduce the flabbiness a bit, more quickly. But it was just too darn hot to wear it much, and I didn't want to have to deal with washing it (breastmilk spillage, etc.) so I stuck it in a box somewhere.

But the maternity belt was a wonderful, wonderful thing. I never wore the top strap with it though. But the bottom part worked great. I'll definitely be wearing it again this time.

somewhere in my closet is a belly support, but i have no clue where, and it is buried under 5 years of junk.

I cannot even fathom going to the gym! I can barely get off my couch!

I'm joining in! We just got a +hpt on Thursday. I actually bet dp $5 that it would be positive, and even after I showed him my chart, he took it. Well, 10 seconds after I dipped the test it was positive

The due date I've gotten based on 'the wheel' is 2/22/09. I feel like I may be further along though because my last LMP was spotty and weird. I won't really know until I have an appt though. I think for the sake of hopefully staving off an induction or another c-section, I want to keep the latest possible date.

I have been trying to ween myself off of coffee, but after reading this thread I think I may quit cold-turkey and deal with the headaches. We will see if I can keep myself from having a cup tomorrow morning.

My body has been playing reverse-morning sickness tricks on me. I get really hungry so then I eat, but midway through whatever I'm eating I get sick to my stomach. I haven't thrown up yet, but it's getting worse.

Well, I am very excited to be here! I never thought I would get to have another baby!

Okay, I ate at Burgerville today. It sounded good, it tasted awesome but now it is sitting in my stomach like a brick and I'm afraid I'm going to lose it. Hurray, a symptom! Finally!

kayaking for 8 hours not a good idea! I went kayaking yesterday for what I thought would be about 5 hours of easy paddling. Well we ended up going way further then expected and we were paddling for over 8 hours. I don't know what I was thinking. I was so exhausted when I got home...still tired today actually. Most people in the group didn't know that I am pregnant so figured I could do it. I don't have the energy for 8 hours anymore!:yawning:

It was great paddling though! I saw foxes on the beach, sea otters all over, tons of puffins, and whales!

AKislandgirl ~ I did a 5K today and I think I'm going to be feeling it for awhile too. It was enjoyable.. just maybe too much.

MrsRoss ~ I've been that way with food too lately. I'll start eating because I'M SO HUNGRY then I kinda feel icky halfway through and stop. How frustrating!

Hey ... a question for the mama's who've been pregnant before:
Do you seek out your cravings and avoid your aversions, or just eat for the sake of eating?
And if you start to get queasy halfway through something, do you stop eating it or finish it and trust that the nausea will pass?
And is it better to just throw up, or do things to avoid it (warm bath, belly rub, calming breathing)?

Ok, so that was more than one question ... Thanks in advance!

LOL...I don't know if you "should" throw up or not, but I try desperately to avoid it. I hate throwing up with a passion, so I do everything I can at the very start of nausea to avoid the throwing up part. :

With me, I generally try to avoid feeling nauseous. With my last pregnancy, I didn't ever feel sick, I just started vomiting in my second trimester. I would go into the bathroom, blow my nose, throw up and brush my teeth. I didn't feel sick, it just happened that way.

I listened to my body, as long as it wasn't a dangerous thing (like craving sand or something icky, which thankfully never happened to me). For instance, last time around I craved turkey sandwiches, BAD, despite having been a vegetarian for over 12 years. I gave in, but bought the free-range, organically-fed turkey. Best dang turkey sandwich I've ever had. :-) Zero regrets. It's what my body needed. So I ate it.

I couldn't stand the notion of peanut butter. So I avoided it.

I think if you're craving a certain food and it's not horrible for you, then go for it. If you're craving a certain food and it is very bad for you (like loaded up with nitrates, or artificial colors or preservatives, etc.) then try to find a healthier version of that food. I crave sour/sweet things and Sweettarts would fit the bill great if they weren't so awful for you. So I eat dried peaches instead. Much better for me, but fills that sweet/sour need.

If some foods turn you off, then don't eat them. Find something that's nutritionally similar that can can tolerate and eat that instead. Absolutely no need to torture yourself. There are plenty of nutritional foods out there.

Regarding vomiting, sometimes it can make you feel better just to get it over with, but I agree with AllyRae. If it's possible to avoid the nausea to begin with, that's the way to go. Sometimes I do eat things I'm not 100% craving or really wanting right then (like saltine type crackers) -- just a bite or two, to stave off the nausea, because I know it works.
