Bless this woman, Stella Onions was on TV this morning to highlight extended breast feeding but the woman she was sat with - Claire Cook (a midwife no less)- was objectionable!
They highlighted the WHO recommendation of 2 years, health benefits, seeing breasts as non sexual etc
The midwife - who started by saying she was trying to get more women to breastfeed for the first 6 months as more than 50% in the UK give up in the first 6 weeks (the lowest rate in Europe)- criticised her for making mothers who find it difficult to BF feel inadequate!! She also said it would be embarrassing for her children when they grew up that their mother had been in the press and had photos of them breast feeding! She said after 6 months there MAYBE some health benefits!

On the plus side she did advocate the need for more help for BF mothers. But she negated that by saying the WHO recommendation was for mothers around the world, particularly mums in 3rd world countries so the need for a 3 yo to BF in the UK is unnecessary - even detrimental to their immune systems as they are not as robust due to not having enough germs - she quoted The Leap Study?

Stella fought her corner well - stating another study that says immunity in breast milk goes up after 2 years of BF and refused to be pushed on saying when she would 'give up' BF. She went on to point out that naturally children will stop BF when their adult teeth came in. The midwife cut in to say that that wasn't true and there are stories from the US of teenagers still BF and that CLW is BAD PARENTING!!! Stella came back with statistics about BF verses FF mortality rates.

I was sitting on the sofa BF my 20 month old seething that a professional could be so negative especially when she was supposed to be raising BF rates!!

Sorry had to vent. What is this Leap Study?

I googled the LEAP study, and it's to do with peanut allergies. The link is above.

Y'know, I think I have a tiny little clue why UK breastfeeding rates drop after 6 weeks. I suspect if people like that MW stopped "helping" some of the women with "problems" wouldn't have problems.

From what I hear, most midwives in the UK are more like glorified nurses. They usually work in hospital in close collaboration with obstetricians and their training in not natural minded at all. However, they are not supposed to be allowed to mention or help with with formula feeding (which might be a bad thing if they do not get to discuss its risks...).

Awwwwwww, my MWs are gems, pro natural birth, pro breastfeeding. After my last birth I had a great MW visit who was thrilled I was tandem feeding.

The MWs do work with Obstetricians but it is up to the pregnant woman wheteher they see an Obstetrician. My MWs do there best to keep me away from Obstetricians.

As we like to say - MWs are for normal pregnancies and births, Obstetricians are for the abnormal.

The problem at the moment is lack of MWs, lack of MW jobs which all in all means staff shortages, we are also apparentlyy short of Obstetricians and it all impacts care.

I have met few MWs pro the medical model, the ones I know have done extra training in homeopathy, reflexoloy etc.

We have bad apples and good apples.
