Canning Butter?

Not sure where this fits but...

Has anyone tried this? http://frugalabundance.com/homecannedbutter.htm

There was an AWESOME sale on butter Saturday (wish I could of bought more, darn limits!!!) and I really need every bit of freezer space possible. I would love it if I could can it in small jars as it would also free up fridge space.

Any BTDT? Good/bad?

Thanks! :

I know! I literally have no freezer space (had to take some things out to close it). I've read everything I can and it seems to be split on "it's the greatest thing ever" to "you'll probably die if you do this". I guess I'll just keep trying to use things up out of the freezer for now as I don't want to take a chance.

Well... FWIW, I know you can buy ghee, which is just clarified butter, at the HFS in a jar. Really, all sorts of dairy products become shelf stable when bottled/canned, even just plain milk, right? I think it would be worth researching more, i you are considering it... if not to stock up on butter when it's on sale, than to have some butter in food storage just to have butter in food storage. 'Cause butter is tasty and it would be a shame not to have butter if you have to use all that flour/wheat/whatever in food storage and not have butter...

I would have major concerns over the safety of canning butter at home. I found this link you might find useful:

I have read about this a few places. A lot of old time canners still do it. The USDA doesnt reccomend it but what do they know. Everyone I have read has had good results with it.

there was a thread on here a while back that I read, it gave instructions on canning butter and also canning cheese!

I can't find it though! I think it was one of the emerg. preparedness threads...not sure though.

I would clarify the butter before canning it

I think I might try one small jar and see how it stores for a bit. Real butter is definately a luxury for us (although we definately prefer it) and it is great to have to suppliment our storage.

We're getting a second chest freezer by the end of summer so hopefully we won't have this problem later on. I'm having to pass on so many great sales due to lack of space

I've never canned butter or cheese but we get canned butter and canned cheese(Kraft brand) from family in the Philippines.

I would read that link Vanessa posted if you haven't yet.

I haven't tried it, but I just saw a tutorial about canning butter. It keeps for up to three years, apparently, which is amazing.

You are going to LOVE your second chest freezer!
