HUGE tonsils = allergy??? **update post #9** - Page 2

We are not vegetarians, but my kids can't do gluten/gliadin/wheat, barley, oats, quinoa, soy, dairy, eggs, and a host of other things. There are still LOTS of things they can eat....millet, sweet potato, buckwheat, tapioca, tons of vegetables and fruits, chickpeas, lentils, kidney beans, navy beans. Do you eat fish? That is a fantastic protein, and you still won't be eating red meat (beef/pork) or poultry. When we had to cut rice for my son and corn for my daughter, I didn't think we'd be able to do that and everything else. But you do what you have to. My kids now eat peanut butter. I use almond butter to make granola bars. We have coconut milk and coconut oil as good fats (and I make coconut milk yogurt to put in smoothies, where you can also add flaxseed, honey, and other things.

The elimination diet takes you off everything you think you're reacting to, and gives you a baseline. When you get to that, yes, you are supposed to add back in, and keep it in if you don't react. They say that if you re-trial after going off it WITHIN three weeks, then your reaction will be greater than normal, so it is easier to SEE a reaction.

An allergy test won't do any good if it's an intolerance, which is much more likely to cause enlarged adenoids and frequent ear infections. It will be good if she actually has an IgE response to foods. Given your family history, it sounds like you're an atopic family and it is much more likely that your children will have food intolerances (according to the pediatric GI doc I went to with my DD).

I wish either of my sister-in-laws had listened to me and tried taking their kids off dairy before getting tubes in their ears, and adenoids removed. A dietary change is so simple and surgery is hardly ever a "simple" thing.

Another update:

That tonsil stopped shrinking!:

Here's a link to my latest post with the whole huge long update:
http://www.mothering.com/discussions...4#post12138844

but the basic story is that she's still off dairy, but we saw really no results with the elimination diet. I'm keeping her off dairy to try and help the ear infection problem.

her sleep study DID show an apnea which shocked me. she barely snored at all during the study.

now waiting to find out the next step and doing lots of soul searching.

XOXO
