So sad...and it annoyed me reading people respond to my post with *male circumcision is absolutely NOTHING like FMG.* Yeah, in some cases I definately agree, FMG is worse. But in many cases its taking less skin than a male, its just as painful for a male (if not moreso), the most basic form (removing only the hood of the clitoris) is hardly worse than male circumcision imo. The primary difference I've seen is that its done on females when they are older and with non-sterile intruments. However, this is true of male circumcision in many countries. I dont know, I guess I just see it as equally bad in many cases....and I know, I've completely gone off topic, lol.

I showed that site to my dh and we read through it together. Both of us had tears in our eyes by then end. I feel so horrible for these women with no rights, no chance to escape. Its one of the few things I've seen that make me happy I live here.

it is equally bad. people think that it must be ok or even good because it is common and doctors wouldnt do it if it wasnt. wheres the logic there?

I've always felt that even though the more severe forms of FGM are more invasive and disfiguring than typical male circumcision, the less severe forms of FGM are clearly equivalent to the male version. Thus, it's nonsensical to reject all FGM as wrong and illegal (even if the sterility of the procedure were to be maintained) but to consider the male version as OK. People just put on blinders to what goes on in their own culture sometimes. It's sick and sad.

Actually, to the best of our ability to determine with the knowledge that we currently have, the average equivalent to routine and ritual male prepucectomy for female children would be:

the amputation of the clitoral hood and most or all of the inner labia;

the stripping out of an at least inch-wide circumferential ring of the frontmost inner vaginal skin; and

the rough and random sealing of the two resulting raw edges of skin against each other through the application of thousands of pounds of pressure.

This would cause, as far as we can accurately estimate, a comparable loss of female preputial movement over the clitoris and flexibility and movement of the inner vaginal walls, and of sensory input from the inner labia, clitoris, and to some extent the inner vagina from the resulting keratinization -- the best abstrat simulation we can construct in the female case to the functional detriments suffered by males from their prepucectomies.

Personally -- and objectively -- I don't consider the lesser forms of FGM to be equally severe to routine and ritual male prepucectomy. I consider them less so.

I don't know how you could rate any of this stuff as to which is worse- it is all evil and horrific.

Rating it follows naturally from trying to understand and define it all as knowledgeably and accurately as possible.

Of course, one doesn't have to push those particular limits to be against routine and ritual child genital mutilation or even to work against it effectively. We're not all suited to the same efforts. For example, I'm not a good candidate for gentle, compassionate persuasion. I can do that, but it's a huge strain, and therefore an inefficient waste of my resources. I'm more suited to depravedly indifferent, brutally honest analysis and peer-review.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you wrote here, but it states the abuses are listed in no particular order. Just as well, I agree, it IS all evil and horrific!
