Jonathan is on Atarax for an antihistamine daily and a low dose steroid which I try to use very rarely.

All 3 of my kids (ages 10, 8, 3) are on Zyrtec. The youngest also gets a dose of Gripe Water before bed each night, and a children's Pepto (calcium carbonate, but it doesn't have cornstarch like Tums does) for the calcium.

Do you find the Zyrtec works well for them?
How bad is their eczema? I don't think J's anti-h works for him and when the dose is upped it totally makes him a zombie
His eczema is mod-severe in nature and he is pretty itchy most of the day. I have his appt with the allerrgist NP today and I am hoping they try something else.

7 yo old ds is on meds for allergies and asthma and has been on and off since he was 6 months old.
When he was younger, I seemed to be able to control his excema fairly well with diet, but as he developed asthma, I had to accept that meds were necessary. We had a hard time finding an antihistamine that didn't make him a zombie as well (zyrtec, atarax, benedryl, claritin etc). The one he's on now and the first one w/o side effects is Allegra. It is a prescription that we get and seems to be working for him. One that did make him mod. drowsey but works great for skin allergies is Hydroxyzine. That's what we used until he seemed to out grow some of his more severe skin alleriges.
He's also on a daily steroid inhaler for his asthma that I HATE to give him, it pains me to think of what kind of damage it is doing. However, I have talked to our naturopath DR. and he says that it is such a low dose he doesn't forsee any problems with it which makes me feel better. He also takes albuterol inhaler as needed for asthma attacks which he very rarely has thanks to the steroid. I have dabbled a little with vitamin therapy for him and still need to get on the ball with getting all the supplements prescribed and really get serious about it.
Good luck, I know that having our babies on meds is a scary and uncomfortable thing.

The Zyrtec is for inhaled allergies and works for all of them, with no side effects). It doesn't do anything for the eczema on DD. The only thing for that is avoiding corn. She can't even touch it, without getting big eczema patches on her inner thighs (don't ask why it's THERE).
Gripe water is for the stomach issues of food intolerances (fennel, ginger, and chamomile). Works wonders.
