I'm wondering if anyone tried the pay per click on google and if it was effective in getting sales.

I signed up for it last night. I haven't received any sales yet but I can see how many times my ad has been shown.

I had it for a while, but never traced any sales back to it. I would have had to pay TONS of money to make it worthwile. I payed like $3/day, but that only bought me 10 clicks per day....which is not worth it at all. I'd probably have to get like 25-50 clicks for it to convert to a sale, which would end up costing me about $300-400/month. Just not in my budget right now.

You know, I had actually the opposite result.
I'm a local doula, so my business HAS to be local. Google Adwords is targeted by location, so it worked great for me. The keys are to keep your keywords to a very specific minimum and to set your budget AT OR OVER $40. Sometimes web hosting sites will give you codes for a free $25 or so to get started.

Yes, I could see that. You would have more success if you are a really super specialized business. Like, if you had a small amount of competitors and you focused your search locally. For me, being a toy store, I have zillions of competitors on a national level. Therefor, my ppc's are more costly.
