Training pants?

Hello all. My son is 18 months and we are thinking of starting some potty learning. I would like to make some training pants ahead of time, but I don't really know a thing about them. Some of the patterns I have found online have PUL on the ourside...some just have cotton that would leak. I know the requirements for trainers are different for diapers (as in you don't really want it to be so absorbant and leak proof that it works like a diaper), so I am wondering which is best?
Anyone have a suggestion of a pattern that worked for them?

Thanks!
Jill

I don't have a pattern, but for my 19 month old I just bought some Gerber training pants and am planning to sew a little extra absorbtion in the center panel (1-2 layers of flannel maybe?). I'm not sure how well that will work, but I tried the originals on him and he peed right through them in one go.

I found a GREAT training pant guide here online under the stinky threads about patterns for cloth diapers. It is for a boy short kind that requires no elastic and it gives you options like optional PUL or extra absorbant inserts. I LOVE it! My daughter who is also 18m and VERY small couldn't fit in in gerber she is too small. these work wonderfully. I added extra padding where I knew she would soak through and now it hold just enough to not make a huge mess all over my house if she mistakes but it still let sher know she did make a mistake! =)
The pattern is called knickers. LOVE it!

Wee Wika Knickers. Has different ways to finish them out, too. I used t-shirts for the fabric and microfiber towel for the soaker pad.

I've bookmarked this but not made them yet.

I imagine if you just cut the shape out of a pre fold you would be good to go without having to add soaker layers.
