Need help re painting my bathroom-PICS **UPDATE**

Hello ladies,
I have a dilemma and I need some insight. Ok, my bathroom is not real small but not large either. The flooring is a tan/beige tile with white in it and the decor is palm trees. The walls are currently a yellowish/beige. Its too bright, it makes the room look stark and cold I think. I want to paint it a darker brown to warm it up a bit. . .So the problem is, I cant decide which color to use that will match the flooring and the palm trees. . . . Any help?

This is my bathroom....

This is the shower curtain and the flooring . . .

This is the showercurtain with my color swatches I am looking at. I want to go with the darker brown in the palm trees...

But the lighter color goes better with the floor?? Can I get away with the darker color and the floor?

Well, not to change the subject, but what about green? I think a green would go well with the curtain and the floor seems neutral enough to go with a green wall.

But, I also like the ones on the card to the far right; they seem to pick up some of the color in the floor and the curtain. I'd use the lightest one or the one right below. Smallish spaces like bathrooms can get closed-in feeling if they are too dark.

Happy painting,
Melinda

I thought about green but I think it would look cool (as in tone). I want it to look warm and cozy. The bathroom now just feels so cold and bright. I agree with the one on the far right. Thats the one I was looking at, the only thing is I am afraid it might have too much pink tones in it?? Maybe not?

I like the top swatch on the second one from the right. I wouldn't go any darker!

what about stenciling a border up near the ceiling... maybe coconuts... using either from the 1st or 2nd swatch, 3rd color down (could even get a little bottle of acrylic like sold in the craft section and spray acylic over it)

you might be able to leae the wall color as is and do a stenciling up top and bring things back down so it's not so stark.

for the wall color, I like the 2nd swatch from left, top color, but any of the lightest shades from any of the swatches would look great.

Wouldnt stenciling something be too much print for such a small room? I mean I got the printed floor tiles and the shower curtain is printed and the rug is printed??

I don't really know what the books and stuff reccomend... I'm going with my gut...

What I see looking at the first picture showing the whole bathroom is that huge amount of space above the shower curtain on that wall... it looks to be as tall as the bathtub is. Even if the shower curtain was closed there would still be that blank wall staring out on you.... Maybe it's because there is activity going on with the print of the shower curtain and the floor pattern (I don't actually see a rug pictured, but add that in also... that wall just seems very overpowering, in it's bleakness.

... here's another something I'm thinking... looking at the shower curtain, there is a darker color in the background fabric, there is also different shades of colors in your floor tile, then there is soild white with the tub/toilet and cabinet, I guess I'm thinking that maybe if the wall had something going on with it also it would just blend in somewhat...

what I was thinking with the stenciling, was something like.. hae you seen the ivy tupe design that is real thin, maybe only 3 inches wide and that flows and twits and turns, it's not a solid design at all, lot's of space... you couldn't do ivy, wouldn't go with the tropical theme but something that was similar in it's openness and space between, but touch of color besides a solid... I know I had originally said coconuts... how would you actually draw them out? I don't know, actually thought about that today in the car... thinkg of me and my 'reccomendation'... "draw coconuts on you wall.. yeah right, great advise... how to do that in reality?!" something though... something to make that wall different, to stand on it's own to stand out.... I know it's probably low light in there, but what about some sort of live plant on the top of the cabinet that's in the tub area that somehow vined along that wall.... some sortof do-dad, picture, decor... maybe even... okay, please don't throw something at me... but a couple of coconut face/masks... I've seen them in the turisty areas at the beach.... something smaller though, no bigger than the distance between the ceiling and the top of the tub cabinet, and the top of it hung at most 1/2 that distance down from the ceiling...

I do see at the top of your shower curtain there is a square on point pattern, that little bit in the curtain ties into the floor with it's squares on point... so if you were to hand something or do something on the wall, what about something with that same square on point?

Boy do I feel like I'm really overanalizing someone elses bathroom here.... and you probably shouldn't listen to me and my ideas at all since I'm the one painting all different quilt block patterns on the wall behind my sink in the bathroom... talk about busy...

Maybe just going with the paint that does have the pink tint in it would tie the wall into the floor and that would give you the look you were after...

enough on other folk's potty's for tonight....

Blue? With Dark green and tan?

I dont want yellow. Thats what I have in there now and the shower curtain is not yellows it tan and browns. Now a Tan color might work but I am wanting to do it a dark brown so it makes the white cabinets and stuff pop out..

Ok well to start with the darker shade in the shower curtain is actually a gray color. Like muted gray blended in the background. I dont want to bring out the gray.

And second- Yeah I laughed to myself when I read your post about painting a border!! Ha ha...Me? Yeah right.. painting is not my thing. I couldnt draw a stick person! I dont really want to make a border though, I dont want to make it "busier" looking, kwim? I just want the walls to pop out and really bring out the browns and tie it all together. ??

Good ideas but not what I am looking for. Too bad I cant draw. I could come up with something probably. Thanks!!

The green in the palm trees is a really yellow green, a warm green, so it wouldn't look too cool at all. I think you'll be hard pressed to find a brown that works with both the shower curtain and the floor.

Really, use the green.

I agree that a warm (yellow) green would look best.

If I had to choose from your swatches, I would go with the one on the far right, second from the top. I think it best picks up tones from the curtain and floor.

I thought of that but wouldnt it be hard to find the right shade for the palm tree green AND match the shade of the bath towels? Cause the bath towels are always hanging out and they are DARK GREEN. I dont want dark green on my walls but wouldnt painting the walls the yellow green on the shower curtain look weird with the dark towels hanging against it?

You don't want to match the bath towels. They pick up the dark green in the shower curtain, and you want to look for a green that is similar to the light green of the palm trees. You have some leeway--you may find that a green as bright as that of the palm trees is overwhelming on the walls; in that case, pick one that is slightly duller.

I looked briefly at Sherwin Williams website and picked a color called Tupelo Tree. Their website allows you to try out colors in a room, and their bathroom scenes even allow you to pick a towel color. Give it a try, though be aware that their scenes are deceptively overlit, so that colors always look lighter and less bright than they really are.
