Knitted gift for newly prego mom?

Hi Ladies,

My friend is currently trying to get pregnant and I want to have something neat to give her when she announces her pregnancy... I was thinking something for her, and something for baby (yes, I know it could be a while, but it could also happen today, so I want to be ready, even if I have to stash it away for a while!). But I have no ideas what kind of knitted gift would be good for a pregnant mom... ideas? It would be even cooler if the two things "matched" or coordinated in some way

Something mentioned many moons ago in a DDC I was in was the idea of a build-a-bear bear for that pregnancy- and I kind of like that idea, geeky though it is- teddy bears are so quintessentially baby, and it's something to snuggle to during those first horrid "shoot me now, please, it's humane" weeks of pregnancy. Obviously, knitted, not shop-bought...

I would do a sweater for the baby and I love fingerless gloves as gifts right now so I would do Fetching in a matching yarn.

I always do toys as gifts, even for the mom, but pick a toy that suits the mom's interests that she can use with the baby.

I'm so wary of knitting stuff before the baby is born - make sure, before you do, that she doesn't have superstitions about it.

For baby knitting, I would avoid things that have sizes. Toys and blankets are good.

I've been making Blanket Buddies as baby gifts. They're super simple. The pattern is from 101 Designer One Skein Wonders.

I just bought the pattern for the Baby Surprise Jacket and I can't wait to try it!
