We considered getting an electric mower and did quite a bit of research. We figured we didn't want a corded one, because of the hassle and imminent threat of running over the cord. With the battery ones, you have to be careful not to buy that's too cheap or the battery will peter out on you rather soon, and replacement ones aren't cheap. Since our yard isn't very large we decided to go with an old fashion pushmower. They are actually very rewarding even for the extra effort required.

We have a Neuton cordless electric. It's great. Cute, too! It doesn't cut as short as our gas mower did, but that's not really a problem. Well worth the trade off for the clean air and low noise. You can actually have a conversation while it's running.

We have a corded Black and Decker. I love it! (Twice as much, actually, when my neighbor was mowing at the same time as me this weekend. Every time she passed by fence, I'd cough from the fumes.) That said, we have a pretty small yard.
I've only run over the cord once, and it was below the blade level so it didn't even get nicked.

Have you thought about a reel mower? We have this one (http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...me=Reel+Mowers) from Sears and I love it. Very quiet and inexpensive and it dosen't take any longer to mow my 1/2 acre than with my older gas one.
Just a thought. You do have to mow a bit more frequently during the high growth times, that's about it though.

We have a corded Snapper. I like it lots better than the gas mower we had at our rental. I could hardly push the gas mower, but the electric is easy to use.
I am super paranoid about mowing over the cord though!

I don't have a yard, but I was over in my friend's last weekend. Her gas mower died and she bought a push reel mower instead. I have never seen my kids beg to mow the lawn and FIGHT over whose turn it was to use the mower before
It is light enough for my very petite dd11 to use easily and practically noiseless.
My friend wants us to visit every weekend now so the kids will mow her lawn for fun
