to prologue or not to prolouge, that is the question

prologues...like them or hate them? I sometimes wish an author would of rather snuck the prologue info into the novel instead of spelling out all the secrets of the past/future up front...HOWEVER, now in the middle of writing my own novel I am stuck with my own question? should I use a prologue or not? Should I just flashback somewhere after the first chapter instead? And how long can a flashback be before it gets a reader lost? And how many flashbacks are healthy?

so the question is, should it be a prologue or a latter on flashback? how do you decide?

Well...all I can say is that my husband got his agent by just showing him the prologue to a novel...He's got two books in print right now witht he 3rd coming out in November...

I like prologues. They can be darn arty.
