I caught a bit of Hugh Fernley-Whittingstalls new series on tv last night. They were talking about the nutrients in chicken and it was very interesting. They had an expert on who studies this and has found that the levels of omega 3 in chicken have dropped dramatically since the 1970s as conditions for the chickens have worsened. I think he said it has dropped by 80% or something.
He did a test on some different birds. They tested a regular factory farmed bird, an indoor reared cornfed bird and a free range organic bird. Bet you can guess what happened! The indoor bird was very fatty, but contained only a tiny tiny ammount of omega 3. The cornfed bird was even fattier with no better ammount of omega 3. The free range bird had more protien and 10 times the omega3. :
I only caught that bit but its nice to have what you know confirmed by the popular media for once. And the results that Hugh FWs 'chicken out' campaign have so far been quite encouraging. Theres a clip about it here - has very strong language from his local village idiot in it so don't watch with kids around!
The program is on again on Saturday on channel 4 or on the website for any one in the UK.
