Saving hardwood floors

Is there any way to save old stained hardwood floors? Ours are old and yucky but I would love a way to make them nice without spending lots of money.

The traditional only way to fix this is to have them sanded & refinished. What I did with a set of floors in a apartment I was in that was looking dingy was to buy a full quart of linseed oil and to completely polish the floors with linseed oil and a bunch of old cotton rags-They looked great and the landlord was very happy. It will darken the wood over time, so I don't reccoment repeated applications, but it is a natural way to hydrate and improve the wood.
