Update about my 26 month old ...who is now 27 months!
We saw a dentist today and he said the two brown spots were not cavities, and only contained the slightest amount of decay.

He was uber-impressed that I knew about xylitol and MI paste and even said, "Well, normally I would sya you should come back in 6 months for me to check, but you seem to have a very good understanding of dental care and so only come back if you are concerned."
Aw, shucks.
And my dd2 was a total gem, she sat on the chair opened her mouth several times, pointed to where her owy-tooth was, and was just overall an amazing example to dd1 (who is EXTREMELY cautiious and tentative in dentist/doctor type situations) and I am so roud, and pleased and thrilled! Yay us.
