Anyone at risk for Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrom (OHSS)?

I was so excited to be going through my first IVF cycle this month. Was on Lupron and Bravelle, was progressing a little slowly at first so they increased the amount of Bravelle. But then my Estradiol levels jumped up quickly (over 4500) so they stopped any futher Bravelle. I did the trigger shot on Tues night for egg retrieval on Thursday morning.

When I went in for egg retrieval on Thurs am, they told me that I was at high risk for OHSS and that they would want to implant only one egg at most this cycle (I guess getting pregnant actually increases the risk of OHSS and multiples increases risk substantially). But, after surgery they told me they were able to retrieve 46 eggs! Seriously, 46!?! Because of the high number of eggs, again it shows high risk of OHSS so they cancelled the cycle. Of those, I guess we had 26 eggs that fertilized and were progressing normally so they froze them for future cycles.

The good news is I now have enough freakin' eggs for the whole neighborhood. The bad news (in addition to a cancelled cycle) is that I am still very sore from my overactive ovaries and the surgery yesterday and I just have to wait to see whether I get really sick with OHSS or not. Apparently the symptoms come on quickly and don't show up until 5-7 days after the trigger shot. So, I should know by next Tues. :-( Keep your fingers crossed for me that I don't get sick. In the mean time I'm just trying to take it easy and drinking a lot of gatorade.

If anyone else has been at risk for OHSS or has experienced it, I'd be interested to hear your stories.

Wow. 46 eggs!?! That seems insane. No wonder your ovaries hurt! I have no advice, just s

I was borderline OHSS with both my pregnancies, and it was way worse with the second (twins).

About all you can do is take it easy and stay hydrated. Actually Emergen-C might be a good thing for you to drink too - not as much sugar as Gatorade. The one problemn I had was that I drank so much gatorade it gave me a bit of a poo poo problem.

Sorry you are having to go through this. Hoping that you have an easy time getting pg on your first frozen cycle!

Take. It. Easy. Really really easy.

I was just barely at risk, they just watched me closely. Good luck with your future FET!!

BFP ment

I developed it on my IVF #2. It came on about a week after my transfer. My RE told me that I was going to have a BFP because of when the onset of my OHSS was. I still didnt believe him totally until I got the beta results. He was right, and I have triplets. So the theory of it being worse with multiples was so true for me!!! I was fortunate and did not have to get hospitalized or drained. I just drank a ton of gatorade, ate chicken noodle soup and avoided water. My RE tole me I could drink V8 too, but I dont like that. I had to be checked every few days by my RE to make sure it wasnt getting too severe. I looked like I was about 5 months pregnant and it finally started to go away around 7 weeks. It was uncomforatble and I couldnt sleep laying down in my bed, I had to sleep in the recliner. The fluid put too much pressure on my lungs/chest when I laid flat.

Good luck on your FET and I am sorry you had to be cancelled this cycle, that is so frustrating.

Quick update with me.

I went in to the fertility doctor today. He wanted me to come in just to check me personally and ordered some bloodwork. I've been having mild chest pains on my right side for the past 2 days, and it gets more uncomfortable at night when I'm lying down. So, he wanted me to go to the ER to do some additional tests just in case.

Basically they want to make sure there's not a lot of fluid accumulating and/or any blood clots that are forming. Well, after spending the whole day in the ER (more bloodwork, EKG, chest x-rays, and catscan) they found that I have a little bit of fluid in my abdomen and around my right lung. That's what's causing the chest pain on that side.

I have another check-in with my fertility doctor on Friday and I'm supposed to go to the ER immediately if I have a hard time breathing, gain a lot of weight in 24 hrs, or have vomiting. In the mean time, nothing to do but wait and see. So I'm just really hoping it doesn't get worse.

I'm a little bummed out about the whole thing.
