Avoid the RIT dye. Besides the fact it is a horrible dye(causes frustration and fits of anger!) it requires high heat so it can poorly set in your fabric only later to almost completely rinse out wash after wash(can you tell I don't think highly of the stuff).
If you are going to do silk then kool aid is a great option. However, it will not work on cellulose fibers such as cotton
Your best bet are fiber reactive dyes, which is what your run of the mill tie dye kits contain.
