Bummed about Burts Bees sunblock

I was so excited to use it on my vacation a couple of weeks ago and it turns out that it doesn't work at all. I was so bummed that my kids got burnt. I applied lots, reapplied several times, had breaks in the shade and indoors. I did all the things I always do to keep my kids sun safe and normally with chemical sunblocks they don't burn. But they def. did with Burts Bees. I caught it as it was happening though and immediatly brought them inside and used something else the rest of the vacation so it wasn't too bad. That same vac-a my sil read on one of her forums that someone got burnt to a crisp using BB's sunblock as well. Anyways, I did write the company and all they said was that it was FDA approved but yes, non chemical is different then chemical suncreens. Their's is not "towel and water proof". Not even towel proof?? They don't list this anywhere on the product, I looked and looked. They offered to send me some more...um no thanks, why would I want some more of something that doesn't work.
Anyways, I just wanted to put out a warning. I'm sure someone out there has had a different experience, hopefully a good one, but I don't think it works and it is very expensive. So there you have it, my :

I'm sorry that it didn't work for you. I have California Baby sunscreen and it works pretty good. My kids were outside for a few hours and didn't get burned.

I use Badger Sunblock 30 on my stepkids with really good results - never gotten a burn - plus I LOVE that it's incredibly natural - no nanotech particles or weirdo chemical ingredients...

I use Jasons Naturals or Organics or something. They are usually a bit cheaper then the others and it works great.

Actually, no sunscreen is towel proof. There are only a handful ingredients that provide complete protection from both UVA and UVB, and you need both. One causes burns, the other long-term damage. I prefer the non-chemical kinds, especially for faces, because they don't sting when it sweats into your eyes. The two non-chemical, broad-spectrum ingredients are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which is what was in the Burt's Bees you used. They really do work! I have no idea what was up with your sunscreen, but a sunscreen with nothing but titanium dioxide is effective.

We were outside in San Antonio TX in full sun in the worst part of the day yesterday for hours, and LO didn't get burnt using BB's. I put it on really thick. My only complaint is that it makes you look like you have some kind of orange paste on your body. It isn't my favorite. I prefer the Jason/Earth's Best one, but I needed something in a pinch and it was available, and it is certainly better than Banana Boat or whatever else is out there.

California Baby is the only thing that works for us.

I bought some Badger since everyone says it's the safest, but both DS and I got sunburned on Saturday while wearing it. And we didn't even go in the water.

I also have some Alba and find that it works so we'll just stick with that for now. Thanks for the suggestions ladies!

The skin deep website rates many sunblocks by how nontoxic they are AND by how well they work at actually blocking UVA/UVB. Very useful.

DD got burnt last weekend using Badger. First time using it too.

We use Badger with no problems. Have for a couple of years. I leave it on pretty thick though. I just used Jason this weekend and it seemed fine, too, though my kids weren't outside for too long.

I've found the best thing to do if we're going to the beach all day is to make my kids wear a rash guard shirt. Mine have never burned through them and it reduces the amount of sunblock I have to apply by a lot. Esp. for boys. I've seen rash guards a lot of places now, Old Navy, Target, Lands End, LL Bean, etc. Although the stock might be a bit low by now.

I've either been using Mexitan or Coppertone Oil-free and Fragrance-free sun lotion. The kids did get burned one day but that was because I wasn't re-applying often enough.

Oh yeah, I love the rash guard shirst. I have the longer shorts and the short sleeve shirt kind. My kids were getting burnt on the part of their arms that weren't covered. Trust me I am all about the sun protection. Hats, rash guard shirts tons of sunblock etc. But Burts Bees didn't cut it. I'm going to try California baby next.

Great site! I actually have this one in my favorites and forgot to check it. Thanks for the reminder.

BB worked fine for us, but gives DD an itchy, raised rash (we accidentally repeated the incident, confirming the BB as the cause). None of the other natural sunblocks seem to cause irritation. She has/had mild eczema.
