Sphinx seems to be the best answer. I'm reading that there are some limitations but yes, New Posts will be available. I just emailed the engineer to ask about searching for posts by a member and find threads started by a member - he says yes, that's in Sphinx too. :

YAAHH THANK YOU!!:

YEAAAH!!! I can't wait for 3 letter searches! I see that Sphinx is able to do boolean searches ("and" and "not") as well. This is going to be a huge improvement! :::
are boolean searches still going to be enabled to supporting members only??

I wonder what the usage statistics are - I've used MDC dramatically less without the "new posts" feature. Searches aren't a problem for me - I've always preferred google for looking up a specific topic, but that's obviously not the case for everyone....

Searching for a specific topic isn't the problem. Randomly browsing through MDC without the "new posts" feature just makes it harder to find interesting posts to respond to. TAO seems to be going along as well as always, but every other forum seems slower.

What are the perks of a paid/pink use name regarding the search function vs a regular member?
Woohoo! I miss "new posts" and haven't been around much lately due to it being missing.

We abandoned efforts to get our vBulletin search engine up and running again. We surrendered to what seems to be a "get over it" truth - once you reach so many millions of posts in vBulletin, the search engine no longer functions well. It weighs heavy on the server and especially so when you have a large membership using search. After much frustration and investigation into our options we have settled on Sphinx.

We hired the Sphinx team to configure and integrate everything. I signed the contract today. Now we are waiting our turn in line to get the work started. I was told today that they will be able to begin in 1-2 days. A day's work should complete the integration. And yes, I did put in a specific request for 3 letter words to be searchable.

There may be a period of tweaking things to get it working smoothly. So if they do accomplish it over the next three days we could have some further work ahead to get it just right.

That's all I have for an update right now. I'll let you know more when there's more to tell.
: Yippee!!! If only sooner, rather than later!! :::
