Shelly,

I'm wondering, too, if it might be a gluten sensitivity. I know that I feel better/live better when on a gluten-free or candida diet, so I'm wondering if Bear might need that, too. His poo is strong smelling but it isn't a foul odor. However, it isn't the typical "sweet" smelling breastmilk poo. I am taking a daily acidophillus supplement and did throughout my pregnancy, too.

No one in my family has type 1 diabetes, although many of my husband's family have type 2 diabetes including my FIL. I'm not sure if anyone has Celiac disease and I thought of the possibility of this the other week at my foster son's 9-mo-well-baby visit when I mentioned that I noticed he had an extreme reaction to wheat and she asked if he had diarrhea and mucusy poo, as an indicator of Celiac disease. I thought then that maybe Bear had a gluten sensitivity.

I'm going to try eliminating all gluten and wheat from my diet this week to see if it helps. Ugh...I'm so not wanting to eliminate so much from my diet...that means so much more work in figuring out what to eat...I already have a problem getting enough to eat...oh, well, Bear's health is worth every bit of extra effort.

Any other thoughts, suggestions, concerns?

Yes, don't jump the gun... Maybe you should talk to a 'professional'? I'm sure you've done your research and a mother's instinct is usually right on. My concern is that you've mentioned that you already have a problem getting enough to eat. If you are considering altering your eating patterns I would suggest meeting with a nutritionist. You may have many of your own resources and personal knowledge to pull from and I know someone quite wonderful I would recommend if you needed some assistance. She is a holistic life coach who specializes in Nutrition. I am sure others on this board might have recommendations as well... Maintaining good nutritional balance is so important.

Love to you,
S

Hi Melody,

There is a WAPF chapter leader (KerryAnn Foster) in NC who cooks gluten free and casein free 100% b/c of celiac disease. She has a website that is awesome: http://www.cookingtf.com/gfcf.html She has great recipes for cooking according to the principles that Weston A. Price discovered back in the 1930s. Her website is just a wealth of information for anyone who wants to cook in a traditional way (read "healthy way" !

And I wanted to mention this website to everyone before but Melody's post just prompted me to do it now. KerryAnn developed and sells what she calls a Menu Mailer. It is really awesome. She gives you the shopping list for the week and then the recipes (even a preparation schedule). The website has a free menu mailer so that you can see what it is like. You can buy one or a few or sign up for a period of time. I just bought the one called Kids Favorites or something similar---they look yummy! Can't wait to try them.

Hi Melody,

My dd Leah is allergic to gluten and diary. We knew the diary part early b/c of her horrible butt rashes and we ended up completely cutting it out at 14 months and for the first time she slept throught the night. The gluten took a little longer to figure and and a blood test but she had very loose, sometimes mucousy stools too that stopped after eliminating gluten. It was so frutstrating at first but their is actually good bread and good recipes out there to help with this way of life if that is what you decide that you need to do. Working with a nutrionist sounds like a wonderful idea Shelly. I found out that I"m the carrier for the allergies b/c when I stopped eating gluten and diary I felt much better. We are doing treatments called NAET right now through a chiropracter at ABA chiro. (Where Julie's new husband Matt works). Leah is now able to eat things with milk, yogurt, and we just finished the second part of the gluten treatment and all seems well with eating wheat etc. I'm being treated and I feel good eating these too. She and I ended up being allergic to almost everything that he tested. Dr. Pickens (the chiro)said that he finds that alot with a severe allergy. The child/adult is in a chronic state of inflammation and the react to a ton of stuff. Sorry about all the NAET info. I was just really excited to find such a treatment and for us it is really working well If you want additional info or names of places for the bread etc let me know:

Good luck with everything!! ERica

Looking for stores that serve the needs of the Amish (in NW Ohio, SE Michigan or NE Indiana)

Hey Everyone,

I am trying to convert a lot of our appliances and what not (sewing machine, grain mill, etc.) to non-electric or people powered or manually powered (for a multitude of reasons). I found a store called Lehman's (http://www.lehmans. com/index. jsp) which is near Wooster and Canton and they have a lot of really neat things that are non-electric and they have items for making different types of WAPF-friendly foods like sauerkraut (barrels, stompers) and butter (churns) and yogurt. They also have soap-making supplies. You just can't find those things in stores in Toledo!!!!

I am writing this post this morning b/c I wonder if anyone knows of a similar store in NW Ohio or even across the line in Indiana or in Michigan. Please let me know b/c I would love to actually go to the store instead of paying the shipping costs (plus it's more fun to go shopping in a store than shopping online).

Think it is Elissa but not 100% sure who talked about homesteading before. I found this site http://www.jasonunbound.com/project/index.html and not sure if you had it already. Just thought I would pass it on in case you did not.

Toledo Area Parent

I was just wondering if anyone saw the article in Toledo Area Parent written by a pharmacist called Vaccines are a scapegoat? It is on page 13 and the column is called Like Wise: our readers write.

It is a fairly long article but I can type it out if anyone wants me to. It basically says that she believes there is no correlation between autism and that autism-vaccine activists are only speculating that the Poling family was awarded money for autism. She says that the vaccinations could not have aggrivated the little girls mitochondrial disorder. She says that parents using chelation and detoxing to try and help their autistic children is concerning because there is no evidence that they work. Basically she is anti alternative medicine (naturally, as she is a pharmacist). She says she has 2 autistic boys and that it is not caused by anything other than genetics and the fact that they are boys. Her explanation for the rise in autism rates is that we are better at diagnosing it, therefore the numbers seem higher.

I am thinking of writing a letter to the editor for allowing such blatant one sided garbage in their magazine. I know it is a free magazine and pretty mainstream at that, but I can just imagine the number of people reading this and taking it seriously without doing their own research.

Any thoughts?

Anyone wanna meet up this Friday at 9;30 at wildwood park for a nice walk through the woods? Then a trip to the playgroud or vice versa!

I saw it and while I was disappointed I can't say I'm surprised. I also noticed in that same issue there was an ad for some new Ped. or Family Doc. and in the ad it says how she feels very strongly pro vaccination. I don't have the exact wording in front of me since I pitched the mag. I thought that was kinda odd for advertising your new practice. Like "If you don't like vacs, don't bother coming to me!"
I think it's a great idea to write a letter to get the "other side" heard.

Yup, I saw all the same stuff. I was dissapointed. I thought she presented her side well though, not that I agree.

I may be interested in going on Friday. Any way it could be a little earlier (since it gets hot fast)? If not, 9:30 should be fine. I may be up there on Thursday, too, for the reading thing they are doing & then to play on the playground. It is at 10am that day. I'll keep my eye on this post to see if you (and others) end up going.

I saw it too! Yuck! I also saw all the mainstream ped advertisements. I think someone should give the other side, I just can't believe they would publish something like that! And now you know lots of mainstream parents will vac or not do any research on vacs because of this article.

Through the magazines attempts to gain an advertising contract with Kneading Time I have learned that one of the owners is a huge supporter of Cloth Diapering! I encouraged them to do a story but I don't thing the ad rep. thought more about it once she walked out my door. Holly, perhaps you should contact them. Julie and I have previosuly discussed approaching them to do on ongoing column focusing on Natural Family Parenting stories but haven't done it.

mosquitoes

The mosquitoes are insane at our house, we just rush out the door and into our car right now. I feel like we are wasting our summer away between staying away from the mosquitoes and conserving our driving with the high fuel costs. By the way, has anyone noticed the huge jump in food costs? We did our grocery shopping last night and had a bit of sticker shock on the price increases on cheese and milk!

maumme bay?

I know some of you wise ladies will know this answer. We are doing an overnighter at Maumee Bay State Park. I'd like to get there early before check in, which isn't until 3:00. Is there a place we can change into swimsuits? Any other advice about staying there is welcome!

transporting cupcakes

We have Dylan's birthday party set for this Sunday.. I have two questions?\
1. Does anyone have suggestions on how to transport cupcakes??? I could get them prefab style from costco or a bakery but am concerned about the nutrient/sugar/coloring quality. So, I thought I could make them myself but have no idea how to transport without making a mess of them (particularly with the frosting) Help! Should I just go for the ease of the prefabs? Everything else I am doing is either organic or free of HFCS and artificial yukk.

2. The party is set to be outside... looks like I need an alternate indoor rain location. I'm not excited about having it an indoor party at my house! ...we had rain issues in our basement this past winter and it's pretty much off limits. Chuck 'E' Cheese and the indoor play 'n' bounce areas are just too expensive. Any other suggestions?

And I agree, the mosquitoes are a real downer, particularly for our party! In years past, we have had his birthday party at our house and we use the fogger to repel the skeeters. It works for such occasions, we wouldn't use it on a daily basis though.
