Washing machine experts, please help!

So, in addition to my line drying question, I may as well ask this too.

In my little bit of reading up on washers/dryers, it sounds like a front load washer will use less energy AND does a better job of getting more water out of the clothes during the spin cycle.

Is this true?

Our plan was to just buy a used washer but if we are going to line dry, doesn't it make sense to buy a washer that will do a better job of getting all the water out for you?

Sorry I hope this makes sense....I'm being distracted by the kiddos. :-)

Yes, this is true. I LOVE my front loader.

Also, it is gentler on clothes than a top-loader, so your clothes will last longer.

And if you buy an energy-efficient one, you will spend less on electricity.

Some utility companies offer a rebate for buying energy efficient washing machines (and dryers)--check with yours to see if this is a possibility. (I think our utility co. offers a $30 rebate for this.)

We got a $100 rebate when we bought ours. The rebates from our power company go up to $150 depending on the model you buy.

Yes to both of your questions. You'll use less water, less soap, and have less drying to do.

front loaders are THE BOMB. They really do use a LOT less water and spin the clothes a LOT drier.

Don't get a Whirlpool Duet though!!! See http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=878554

Everything A&A said basically They are SO much gentler on clothes. I still have a crappy ole top loader, and when I get the clothes out they are literally tied up in knots.. MIL has a front loader that I've used and never had that problem. They are also VERY good on water.. we're in serious drought here and the govt offers a 200dollar rebate on them, so I'm really eyeballing them now

Thanks ladies. I know it would be smarter of us to purchase a front loader but they just seem so expensive! I'll go do my homework though and see about any rebates being offered by our electric company.

Try doing the math to see how much you would save on your monthly water & electric bills. In the long run the front loaders will save you money - in electricity, water, detergent (generally takes less) & replacing worn clothing.
