FMC is the First Hospital in Arizona to “Give the Bag the Boot”On June 17, Flagstaff Medical Center became the first hospital inArizona to “Give the Bag the Boot.” In an effort to promotebreastfeeding, the Women and Infants’ Center at FMC, in conjunctionwith the national Ban the Bag campaign, will be eliminating bagssponsored by baby formula companies, including formula samples given tomoms when they leave the hospital.“Breastfeeding is important because it offers health benefits forchildren that cannot be obtained through formula,” said Brenda Phipps, lactation consultant for FMC. “There are many studies which indicate that formula in dischargebags undermines breastfeeding and leads to lower breastfeeding duration. The practice of distributing these bags is discouraged by the AmericanAcademy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Family Practice, theWorld Health Organization, the Surgeon General’s Office and theGovernment Accountability Office,” Phipps said. In place of the bags supplied by formula companies, FMC has createdits own insulated bag for moms when they are discharged from thehospital. The bag will contain community resource information andbreastfeeding information for those mothers who plan to breastfeed.FMC’s Breastfeeding Center is located on the third floor of theWomen and Infants’ Center and has been providing support for moms, foralmost 15 years. The Breastfeeding Center offers information, supportand encouragement to approximately 1,300 mothers each year. Servicesalso include phone counseling, specialized outpatient consultation, breast pump rentals and sales, and breastfeeding accessories. For more information on the Breastfeeding Center, call 928773-2605; or for more information about the Women and Infants’ Centerand the programs and services offered to the community, visitFlagstaffMedicalCenter.com and click on the Women and Infants’ Centerlink.

good for them. When I was discharged from the hospital last Aug, I received three different diaper bags from formula companies (they were all called breastfeeding support kits). My roomate was using formula so I gave the samples to her. I did take the rest of the samples though baby wipes, lotion etc.

I also received a breast feeding bag of nursing pads, lanolin the number for the LC and a BF book. DD happened to be born a few days after world breastfeeding week so I am not sure if I would of got a bf bag of goodies. I was determined to BF. I could totally see how a stressed out new mom in pain could stop BF and switch to formula when you are sent home with it.

I can't wait till all hospitals do the same...oh yeah and when society views NIP and Home birth as normal....then I will be the happy momma in the world.

I had my son by VBAC at that hospital. Perhaps it was because I was so adamant and I had a nurse midwife rather than an OB, but no one hassled me about it, and I wouldn't have signed a release for a c-section anyways.
