Homebirthing...PKU/Hearing Test Info...? (XP)

The search feature is disabled here right now. I'm sitting here having ctx (uh...since last Thurs) and my EDD is a half hour away ...I do have a couple of things left to figure out ASAP, so figured I might as well get on it and thought some of you could maybe help.

My DH and I are holding off on newborn vax'ing this time, but we have not yet decided what to do about the PKU & hearing tests for this baby? (Don't know enough...) This is our first homebirth. Any info any of you could pass along would be great. Thanks!

I have no idea, but I guess I wouldn't worry about the hearing test... that can always be done weeks later...

I sure hope your labor goes well, I'm excited for you mama!

my mw did the pku test, got the paper from the health dept. she didn't fill the paper out correctly and we ended up having to repeat it at a lab 2 weeks later.

did hearing test at the hearing test place, with referral from ped.

Midwife did our PKU for June on day 3. Went well I think not as bad as I thought it might be as we had not done them before but some things have come up so I wanted to do it this time. We will hear only if there is a bad result and need to do it again. We did not do Vitamin K because there was no birth trama and no circ so no need. Hearing test just what we've done no actual machine used or anything. Happy Birthing!! Go HOMEBIRTH

Here, too! We'd gotten a paper from the health dept. My MW had never done one before. One of the dots didn't get filled completely (she stopped bleeding) so we had it redone at the ped yesterday. My previous MW (with experience) did our boys just fine.

We abstain EVERYTHING, but the PKU. It's incredibly important to do. If your child has one of the diseases, it's very easy to control with diet. If you don't know and your child eats the wrong food, they'll slowly become retarded as their brain is affected. It's awful and such an easy thing to test for. Not to mention that they test for a bunch of diseases these days, not just PKU which is why it's now called the Newborn Screen. Hospital labs are very good at them - using a warming pack on baby's heel. Only one prick is needed.

Hearing test is non-invasive, but we didn't do it. It was obvious she was hearing just fine!

We are doing both her PKU and the hearing test at her two week check up with the ped. We don't vax either. We are going to do those two things. They will probably send us to the hospital for the hearing test. The PKU they do there.

naking...

pku--very important--we always do. baby needs to be nursing well and be well hydrated when it's done on day three. oftentimes, in the case that baby is not, it's good to wait another few days in order to avoid a false positive.

hearing screen--personally never done it. i think it's pretty obvious to tell if a baby can hear, but that's just me.

we didn't do a hearing test, and went to the hospital outpatient area for the PKU - it was simple, lots of people have to go back for a 2nd one anyway so there were others doing it too.
