Cleaning with salt?

I've heard that some people do some of their cleaning with salt... I currently use vinegar and baking soda for most things. (Everything but dishes and laundry, although a vinegar rinse is always nice.) I'm open to using other things though! so I was wondering what you use salt for, how you use it, etc.

You can use salt in pretty much everything you use baking soda for. Well, ok, not everything. It's not a very good laundry additive, lol.

I use salt when I want a coarser scouring powder. That said, it's a bit tricky to get the water to salt ratio just right. Baking soda is much more forgiving. Plus, it's also a bit more expensive, per ounce, than baking soda.

My friend's mom cleaned her glass coffee pot with salt. She liked it because it didn't leave residues like detergents, I think. That was my only experience with salt for cleaning.

I have pots/pans that are stainless and have a copper bottom to them. When the copper part starts looking dark and icky, I spray them down with vinegar and then sprinkle salt into the vinegar. Shines them up instantly.

My kids had a blast with this cleaning pennies one day.

I use it to scour out my cast iron pans. Works great!
