That said, I'm getting an upright because I know my limitations in terms of losing things at the bottom of a chest freezer and cluttering up the top. I also plan to use the top of it for storage of other things.
actually this is a skill that can be learned. I have every square inch of my upright packed.
granted the ice cream bars and Mr. freezies are randomly paced to fill in the gaps . . . . .

but with good stacking, and a few tetris skill you can get that baby jam packed yet still see everything in it and easily get to it.

I'm not talking about filling it and packing it,I'm talking about the fact that there will be a gap between the stuff and the door and the door shelving, etc and whatnot, I didn't mean to imply there are huge spaces.

ok, I grew up with my mom having this huge chest freezer, they don't even make them that big anymore and I hated that thing. I could never find anything in it. Now, I got a 16.7 cu ft commercial freezer that was 2 years old off Craigslist for $125 (lady didn't realize it was a commercial freezer until I pointed it out, she got it from her neighbor that moved to Canada and left it behind) anyway I also bought a new 16 cu ft freezerless refrigerator the same month becasue the fridge my apt came with sucked and I was throwing out at least $100 a month in food. So I added 2 new appliances and got rid of the old fridge the same month, my electric bill DROPPED by like half if I remember right. Old fridges and freezers seriously suck energy. My mom just got rid of her 30 year old monster freezer and replaced it with an upright and her bill dropped by like $40 a month she said. My freezer is usually packed solid with food and I keep it organized in boxes and wire baskets and I can usually find what I need within seconds. I would go with an upright and just use wire baskets to organize it.

I prefer upright to a chest freezer because it's easier to organize and get things in/out. There are now energy star freezers and I would get that kind if we purchased one. We're going to wait a little while but it's on our radar to get one eventually.

This is especially true if you keep it packed, don't open it (unless you have to) and if you keep it wrapped in blankets . BTDT for a couple of days and everything came out ok.
