Low Blood Sugar and Nursing? x-post

Hi, quick question...

I've really been struggling with low blood sugar lately - 2 or 3x a day, big crashes where I feel shaky, weak and starving. It's so bad - and I think maybe aggravating some vague feelings of depression that I had before - that I actually scheduled a doc appt on Friday. I have a family history of diabetes, though no other personal risk factors, and recently I all but weaned off of Goat's Rue, which actually has a blood sugar stabilizing effect - so my nightmare scenario would be that something has been going on with my health that the Goat's Rue was treating/covering up.

Anyway, I think the doc visit is probably wise just in case, but I was also wondering if this could be normal and related to nursing a one-year old? I thought I'd ask here before I go, since docs often are not the most knowledgable about breastfeeding, particularly past a year!

I have problems w/ my blood sugar like that when I'm pg, nursing doesn't seem to cause a problem. What helps me is just checking my sugars regularly like if I had diabetes. When I'm at my worst I can check up to 6x a day (I check after I'm recovering from a crash so it adds a few), but 4 is normal. I do first thing when I wake up (this could be avoided if you eat right away, I don't since I have to get up and get everyone dressed etc), mid-morning if I had an early breakfast or I'm planning on a late lunch and I've been really active or outside a lot, then afternoon, and then before bed. I make sure I always keep snacks w/ me that have at least 5g of protein in them and I try to make sure I get a lot of protein at meals and snacks. I also keep glucose tablets in my bag too just in case I test and it's low enough that I need something right away! I've been good so far and haven't been testing, but I know the time will come. I found testing last time helped me find out I needed to eat before I crashed so kept me more level than if I just waited to crash and then ate.
