Need ideas postpartum on getting bowels to move again

Wow, we don't have a postpartum forum here at mothering?

I'm three weeks out. (today--happy 3 week bday to my babe!) Anyway, apparently, my lower bowels were so obliterated during the birth process, that they've decided to altogether stop working/moving. Of course I've had bowel movements, but only w/ manual help/assistants. Lord, I am so compacted and filled, yet I don't even feel the urge to go. And pushing, how does one do that again?

And I eat so well and mindfully--tons of fruit, oatmeal, sprouted grains, etc. What gives?

Any unobvious ideas/remedies that won't negatively affect milk? Not looking for suggestions like prunes, etc...

I believe there's now an OTC called glucolax (sp?) that will really help. It used to be available by prescription only, but dh thinks it's now an OTC. Our son used it when he was 8. But, I don't know if it's contraindicated for breastfeeding!

Do you think it's physical or emotional? For me, it was mostly emotional - I just had to get over it. But, I'm talking 3 days, not 3 weeks!! I can't imagine how you must feel!

I am not to that extreme but I haven't gotten bowel movement either... going on 4 days...

No ideas, I'm sorry, but HUGE sympathy!!!

A big keffer drink, usually clears me out. Softens everything up and adds good bacteria to you intestinal tract.

Apple cider vinegar... Put 1 -2 TBS ACV in 8 oz water, sweeten with stevia, honey or agave nectar, drink 3 times a day. Should make you have a bowel movement in 24 hours.

Also, don't know if you are open to OTC drugs, but colace is safe for breastfeeding.

They gave me colace in the hospital. I took it 3 nights in a row and was relatively back to normal right after the 3rd dose.

Maybe check out RenewLife's supplement called Cleanse More. I am not sure if it would be ok for nursing, but you could call them, they are a really helpful knowlegable company, and honestly it would only take one dose at night and you'd be moving and a groovin by morning. You could find their info online, they have an 800 number. They might even have other suggestions for you if that particular porduct is contraindicated.

I'd try a cleanse, something powerful more then the usual fruits and fibers. . that has to be awful I hope you get back to normal soon

This sounds awful! Can your MW/doctor prescribe you a stool softener until you've had a few BMs on your own? I had my first 4 days postpartum and boy was I glad I'd been taking something - even with the softener it was not a fun experience - a little too much like pushing a baby out for my taste!!

You should be able to check kellymom to see which OTC ones will not affect breast milk. I hope things are moving soon for you!

I hear ya!!! I had to get dp to give me an enema after we came home (6 days with no bm) and have had to resort to laxitives as well. Normally I have no problem going at all. This sucks!
