Help with beginning pumping to feed an adopted baby

Thread Starter
I am about to begin pumping for a baby we are soon to be adopting. I have never been pregnant or breastfed before.
I am going to attempt it with out a prescription first, but I am using some supplements. After some reading I decided to use (and bought a bunch!) Mother's Milk Tea. When I went to visit my lactation consultant recently to get parts for my pupmp (I am using a medela classic) she told me she thought I should try Motherlove's More Milk Special Blend. She said it has less doses, and it easier to take.

So, I am wondering for either of these supplements how long do you take it before you see any milk? I have read it can take up to four months to get your milk in, in my situation and was wondering if anyone had ideas as to how long it can be shortened. Obviously it depends from person to person.

Also, how long is it safe to take these supplements? Do you take them until the milk comes in?

Any other info you have on the subject of adoptive breastfeeding would be appreciated!

Thanks!

how exciting to be starting this process. I don't have any personal advice, but wondered if you'd found the kellymom site about adoptive breastfeeding. There are tons of articles and links and perhaps something there will help you find more answers:

Best of luck inducing lactaction for your new little one!

Over in the adoption forum, there's a post about feeding the adopted baby. It's got some good links about inducing lactation. Also, Kellymom tends to be a great resource.
That's great that's you're nursing -- let us know how it goes. Congratulations on the new baby, and welcome to MDC. You should also check out the Life with a Babe forum.

This is pretty much everything I've ever found on Adoptive Nursing, Relactation, Etc.

The first link is to an earlier thread on this topic.

The next link after that is to an LLL feature article on the subject (very heartwarming).

I did update all the links. They should be working. PM me if you need help.

We really need an Induced Lactation forum. These posts are throughout the board over the years and is a situation becoming more common.

I too am inducing lactation. While there are other websites on this topic, they are slow. There are many of us here. We need a place to gather, share ideas, and support each other.

We got our baby with only 2 weeks notice. She was 4 months old. Here is what I tried:
1. Doing it the natural way:letting baby suck. She screamed and wanted nothing to do with it.
2. Herbs. Nothing happened.
3. Herbs and pumping all the time. One drop max.
4. Pumping and Domperidone. Made a teaspoon within 2 days, a tablespoon on day 3, more and more.
5. Finally got DD to nurse with SNS. Eventually got a full supply and quit with the SNS.
6. After 4 months, I quit domperidone and was able to keep a full supply. She nurses about 15 times a day including several in the middle of the night. I have been nursing for a total of 10 months. It took about 5 weeks to get a decent amount of milk and to get her to nurse.

Hope this is helpful.

I just wanted to say, that is awesome. You gals are wonderful to try so hard to breastfeed your children. Most wouldn't go through the trouble. I find it admirable.

I was reading something I hadnt heard about- Goat's Rue? Anyone using this?

Im so happy to have drips every time I hand express. I now have 3 ducts open on each side with many more ducts showing white bumps ready to pop! lol.

This is going so nicely for me right now, Im so happy with my results. Last time I did this, I didnt do a complete protocol.
