Anyone out there darn socks?

Money's a little tight around here and I've been having hard time buying new socks for dh all the time since he often gets holes in them. I'm certain it's possible that the quality of the socks is a factor, but at the moment it's what we can afford.

So...they're just the regular old Hanes socks. Can I darn them? What would be the best way to go about doing that?

I've found a couple of articles online that suggest using embroidery thread for a cotton sock and an old lightbulb. We use only CFLs so I don't have any lightbulbs around. Any ideas on what I could use instead? For the most part, though, I'm having a hard time picturing it in my head. TIA for your help!

I don't know what you could use in place of a lightbulb. I think to darn you just basically weave. I think you make the thread in lines all in one direction, then go the other way and weave the thread through to make a patch. I am having a hard time explaining that!

i think anything that would be rounded and hard would work. really i dont see that any way you sewed it would be wrong as long as the hole is coverd and it is not a big bump to hurt his foot.
for the future info ... have you seen the ones for work boots? they have a added reinforcements in the heals and toes they were priced the same as all the other packs.

When I have done it I haven't used a lightbulb. I just sew back in forth east to west, then back and forth north to south, if that makes sense.

When I learned to darn I learned with an orange. Yes you can stab the orange from time to time but it's not usually a problem - it's more to keep the sock taut while you are working than anything else.

I would think that embroidery floss would work just fine for cotton socks.
