peapod help?

I know flapjack has done this one and I am sure others have too.

Luckily I printed off the pattern before it was taken back from interweave....

OK- so I have never knit anything off a chart before- which is probably a big part of my problem.... But the bottom ribbing makes zero sense to me.

I need to make sure that 'no stitch' means exactly that. It isn't a slip or anything crazy like that right?

And then when I do the ws row- well the whole thing looks funky and I just don't think it looks right. Like some random knits and purls. Wht does this ribbing actually end up looking like?

I am going to frog what I have and start over in some different yarn- I think that will at least make me a little happier. The stuff I was using I just can't like on this project....

I don't have the pattern, but I do know that "no stitch" means that you just ignore that box on the chart. It's just there to help things line up, so pretend it isn't there and don't do anything other than go to the next stitch. As far as the ws rows go, are you reading them in the right direction? I think charts usually go right to left for the first row, left to right for the second, etc., back and forth. I just know that I've seen posts by people who are trying to knit all the rows reading the chart in the same direction.

I don't have the pattern either. But on a lot of lace patterns you purl the ws row. You won't see that in the lace chart but it may say in the directions that you purl the wrong side rows. And then you just start the next lace row at the right side of the chart.

Picture I hated the ribbing until I finished it, and I love it. Seriously, it's now one of my favourite rib patterns.

OK- then I am doing the no stitch right... But I am major confused on the charting. I need more clarification on this....

Honestly, just swatch it and finish the ribbing section. Please? I've found that most of Kate Gilberts patterns make me think she was drunk when knitting, but when its finished I think she's a genius.

Okay, I'm not an expert (or terribly experienced chart reader) by any means, so if I get this wrong, somebody step in!

This is assuming that both right-side and wrong-side rows are charted (as someone mentioned, sometimes one side is all purling or whatever, so it's not charted; check the numbering of the rows to see if they're all on the chart or not). The chart is read as though you're looking at the piece of knitting always from the right side. So, when you knit, you move from right to left, right? So for the first row (right side), you read the chart from right to left. When you start the next row (wrong side), you turn your work so that the wrong side is facing you. But you can't turn the chart over, because then you'll be looking at a blank side of paper. Instead you have to read the wrong-side row from left to right (which is like reading it right to left if you could flip it over and see through the paper).

Does that make sense? (And I'm directing that question both to the OP and to anyone else who's more experienced with charts! )

And, as flapjack pointed out, it may not be your chart reading that's the problem at all. This may just be a "whole is greater than the sum of its parts" kind of pattern!

You are right; no stitch means exactly that. Skip that box and go on to the next stitch.

On the chart, your odd rows are the right side of the work, and since you knit from right to left, you need to read the chart that way. The wrong side rows should be read from left to right on the chart. It seems really backwards until you get used to it!

OK- there is zero reason for me to continue with that because I completely did it wrong.... I was reading the pattern from left to right each row. Which is completely wrong.... I think I am going to try to swatch it out with more suitable yarn and see how it goes. If it goes bad again- I will see my gma next month and she can help me out- cause she is an awesome knitter.

Thanks for the help ladies!
