Breastfeeding past year one

today I gave a presentation to my biology class (college) about the benefits to nursing past year one. If anyone wants the power point go ahead and pm me for it with your email.

I started the presentation with this video to show what most peoples reactions are to extended nursing AND to see their reaction and point it out to them during my lecture.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNBzFOPrbD0
I only showed the first 1 min & 10 sec of it (I really just wanted to show them the public reaction to it and to see theirs so that I could explain that it was a culture problem in N. America and W. Europe NOT a medical reason that women wean @ 6-12 months and have visuals to go with it)

Then I closed with my FAVORITE video dar la TeTa es dar ViDA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=942FRjAJhxU

We have a pregnant woman in the class and some other young women and I was really hoping to reach them and place little seeds in their heads I felt VERY encouraged that ALL of the girls in the class were making happy little laughter sounds watching the children nurse in the second video. Their was no ewww or nervous chuckles at all. I felt like it went over very well and even the guys in class asked some very good questions afterward. (such as can a baby be lactose intolerant of momma milk or allergic etc)

Sounds like the presentation went very well! I love the dar la teta video too I feel like that age group is a great time to catch people as college age seems to be a period where individuals are more open minded--IMHO. Great job!!

Nice job!

My dd asks to watch the "mimi show" (dar la teta) over and over and over again. It's so gorgeous and makes me cry!

However, breast milk is inherently different and cannot be found in other food products. Therefore, it is nutritious and is still beneficial to children beyond their first year. Here are some of the most common myths surrounding extended breastfeeding:

Extended breastfeeding causes cavities- actually cavities are caused by a certain strain of bacteria, not a certain type of food. A child’s susceptibility to cavities depends on their genetic make-up and exposure to the cavity causing bacteria. A child that gets cavities while she is still breastfeeding would be at the same or greater risk if she were weaned. Research shows that along with good oral hygiene breastfeeding may reduce the incidence of tooth decay.

Breast milk is no longer nutritious and prevents children from eating healthier foods- First there are over 100 ingredients in breast milk that are impossible to mimic with any other combination of foods. Secondly your baby still needs more fat than adults do for optimal brain and nervous system development. Breast milk is largely made up of the fat that is required for brain development and is critical for the first three years of life. Third, even after a year your baby is still receiving protective antibodies from you. If either of you are exposed to an illness your body will immediately begin to supply your child with the defenses to prevent or lesson the course of an illness.

Breastfeeding longer than one year will cause psychological harm. There is no research that supports this claim. The American Academy of Pediatrics says that: "There is no upper limit to the duration of breastfeeding and no evidence of psychologic or developmental harm from breastfeeding into the third year of life or longer." (2005) Research does support the opposite: that children that are allowed to breastfeed into toddlerhood are more secure and independent with all else being equal.

Extended breastfeeding is bad for the mother-As long as you properly care for yourself extended breastfeeding is also beneficial for you. Research shows that the longer you nurse your chances of osteoporosis, breast and ovarian cancer among many other diseases decrease. However it is important to maintain proper nutrition. As your child grows he or she will require more fat, vitamins and calories, so you have to eat plenty of the right foods so that there is enough for you both.

Despite its undeniable benefits, breastfeeding past a year can be difficult. Generally our culture does not support it because as I mentioned before, formula is supposed to be stopped at the first birthday. Many people who are tolerant of infants nursing are scornful when they see a toddler doing so. The good news is that toddlers typically do not nurse as frequently as infants!

off to PM you now for the PP presentation.

I also LOVE the dar le teta video.:

EXCEPT- that one part when the little girl is nursing and she tweaks the other nipple. That "tune in tokyo" move drives me CRAZY!!!!

AWESOME!

PS- I cannot stand the "if they can ask for it, they shouldn't do it" argument. What kind of logic is that???:

Glad your presentation went well.

THANK YOU for introducing me to that video. It's wonderful and I see so many things that my daughter does NOW in it. I'm going to show it to her tomorrow when she's awake -- I think she'll like it!!

I didn't know they made that video in PR. Hmm...maybe they should play it on TV again. Nothing more frustrating than women ffing for the sole reason that it's free from WIC. :
