yellow goop in baby's right eye - help!

About 2 weeks ago I started noticing yellow goop around my DS's right eye. It doesn't seem to bother him and when it builds up I wipe it off gently with a warm, damp washcloth. Neither the eye itself nor the eyelid is red or swollen. My mom suggested that it might be an infected hair follicle, and I do have an appt. with our doctor in a week and a half...but I just wanted to know if anyone's dealt with this before. If it is an infection I want to avoid antibiotics and would prefer a more natural treatment if at all possible. Thanks!

It's the tear ducts, sometimes they get a little clogged. Almost every baby I know has had this so it's fairly typical. Gently wiping it with a warm, damp cloth will help to break it up, as will squirting breastmilk into his eye.

My DS had what you describe and it was just the tear duct. The PP's suggestions worked for me, cleared right up.
I forget how old DS was when he started to really cry, but once the big tears came, the goop went away. Now he just gets the typical night crust that we all do from time to time.

Our DD has the same thing...as long as the eye isn't red, it's a blocked duct-- you might also try gentle massage between the corner of the eye and the nose. That is supposed to help loosen the blockage. Usually clears up on its own before baby is a year old (though we're still waiting).

I did the massage thing for ds and it seemed to help a bit. He had the goop and it was a blocked tear duct. It cleared up on its own at about 5 months. I was terrified about it at first too!

Nothing we did ever worked. The tear duct membrane has to pop before goop will drain. We were told not to sweat it until he was a year old, but magically, the day he turned 16 weeks old it cleared up.

The first sixteen weeks of pictures were kind of gross, though, and all my shirt sleeves had slime trails for awhile.

I agree with PP, try squirting breastmilk in the eye. Breastmilk is so awesome, it cures so many things.

thanks so much everyone! It's nice to know it's nothing to worry about.

I had the same thing with DS. Breastmilk in the corner of his eye, gentle massage, cleared up with a day or so.

We've got the same thing going on here and I just started putting breastmilk in it. Clogged tear ducts are common in LO's. The only time for concern is if the white part of the eye (sclera) is red 'cause then it might be pink eye....
