Knitting a wool, waterproof mattress pad?

I saw a post in Natural Home and Body Care about a wool puddle pad, those things are expensive!!!!

DS is a bedwetter, no big deal but, the old mattress cover needs to be replaced and I don't want to buy the kind we had before.

So I got to thinking. Why not knit one? Of course not a full queen size, just something that I can put under him. I would lanolize it like a wool dipe cover.

Has anyone done this? Is this even a good idea? Should I felt it to make it that much better?

i haven't knit one, i think it would be fine, like a flat cover, KWIM? and just shrink it.

what I did do was get alot of soft sweaters from the thrift store and make quilts out of them. much cheaper than using virgin wool. And I found quite a few cashmere and merino ones. I made several so any few could be washed and drying, and still have one for a nap place, bed etc.
- shrunk all sweaters (wash/dry several cycles) prior to cutting up, and on the seam side put organic cotton/ bamboo velour. So velour to baby, wool to bed.

I had considered that, but being the lazy bum that I am, my next consideration was buying a wool army blanket and lanolizing it and using that as a mattress pad. Do you think that would work?

that's precisely what I did, and it works wonderfully well! I got them wicked cheap at a surplus place, felted them (took them to a laundromat to use the BIG washer/dryer) and they're the perfect twin bed size.

The wool sweaters crossed my mind too.

The army blanket sounds like a great idea!! There is a store not that far away, I'll have to go check it out.

Thanks ladies, I'll probably do the sweaters and the army blanket Off to check my stash first
