soaker help

Thread Starter
I really want to knit a wool soaker for ds2. I've been browsing some patterns and found a few I like but none of them tell me how much yarn I need. Is there a rough estimate I can use-I don't want to end up short!

And I've found some patterns say merino is ok and some say it won't work-does that just depend on the pattern?

TIA!!!

I have used around 220 yards for the four soakers that I have completed. I have tried a few patterns and I always come out with a little bit left. (I am making soakers for a 12 month old)

Are you knitting a soaker (shaped like underpants) or shorties or longies (shaped like shorts or pants)?

To make a traditional soaker for a child who weighs 15 to 20 lbs., using worsted weight, you might plan on about 230 yards. For a child who weighs 20-25, maybe about 250.

And the thing about merino is that it is typically less durable than blends, and for soakers for kids on the go, you really want durable. But on the other hand, it's gorgeous and soft. Pesonally, I only knit newborn and small soakers in merino, and even then, they suffered with the frequent washing. For softness, a lot of moms on here like Blue Faced Leicester for soakers, saying it's super soft and strong (though I've never tried them myself).
